SCHENECTADY, NY (April 21, 2018) – The Vassar men's lacrosse team trailed by just two at the half, but Union College was too much in the second half as they came away with the 11-6 victory over the Brewers on Saturday afternoon in league action.
With the loss, the Brewers fell to 1-6 in league play and out of contention for the final conference playoff spot.
It was a good start for Vassar as
Cameron Erdman tallied his first career goal to give the Brewers an early 1-0 lead. After Union responded and tied the game,
Nick Diamond fed
Kyle Cherry for the tying goal. The first quarter scoring continued when the Dutchmen scored back-to-back goals just 14 seconds apart to grab a 3-2 advantage. Before the end of the first 15 minutes,
James Thomas would knot the score at 3-3 when he took the ball himself and scored at the 3:01 mark.
Union regained momentum in the second stanza and built a 7-5 lead at the break, outscoring the visitors 4-2 over the second 15 minutes. Vassar's goals came from the Cherry and then
Michael Killion with just 33 ticks left before the break.
In the second half, all the momentum was on the side of the home team. Union scored three straight goals in the third and to begin the fourth as they held a 10-5 lead with 13:51 to play. Thomas would tally his second of the day with just under 12 minutes to go, but Union's defense would hold the Brewers at bay for the remainder of the game.
Thomas would finish the game with three points (two goals, one assist) while Cherry added two scores. Erdman and Killion both added scores and Diamond dished out one assist.
At the faceoff "X",
Matthew Lowery was 12-21 while picking up six groundballs. Erdman led the team with two caused turnovers.
Matt Boyd and
Erik Mikelinich split time in cage combining for eight saves on the day.
Vassar finishes out the regular season at home on Wednesday, April 25 at 5:00 p.m.
