POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 14, 2018) -- Sophomore
Mitchell Mullock tossed eight innings while allowing one run in game two, helping Vassar College knock off Clarkson University 6-1 in game two of a Liberty League doubleheader to salvage the final contest of a four-game set. CU earned game one Saturday 4-0.
Game 1 - Clarkson 4, Vassar 0
Clarkson starter Will Coleman tossed a four-hit, complete-game shutout over Vassar in the opening game of the day, striking nine to help CU earn the series win. The Golden Knights pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth and top of the sixth to provide Coleman with plenty of run-support.
The Brewers saw freshman
Matt McGannon go 2-for-3 in the opening game, while senior
Matt Hernandez and junior
Jake Doyle each posted singles for the Brewers. VC starter
Joe Conti allowed five hits over five innings of work, surrendering three runs. Freshman
Hawkins Hodges worked a scoreless seventh for the Brewers, striking out one.
Game 2 - Vassar 6, Clarkson 1
The Brewers got another strong start from Mullock, who scattered seven hits over his eight innings of work, needing just 99 pitches over that span to help VC earn the victory. Offensively, the two big hits of the game both came from senior
Bobby Kinne, who hammered his fifth home run in the bottom half of the third while providing a bases-clearing triple in the eighth inning to help seal the deal.
Kinne finished 2-for-3 with a season-best five RBI, scoring once, while freshman
Tanner Blough was 4-for-5 with three runs scored. The four-hit game for Blough was the first of the season for the Brewers, while the five RBI from Kinne was also a season-high for a contest.
Junior
Bryan Rubin was 1-for-4 with a RBI and stolen base, while sophomore
Evan Trausch and McGannon each had singles for Vassar. Freshman
Logan Willans worked a scoreless ninth, striking out the side while walking one and allowing a hit.
