ELMIRA, NY (March 31, 2018) – The Vassar men's volleyball team won their ninth straight match and closed out their league schedule with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-23) sweep of Bard College on Saturday afternoon.
At 8-1 in the UVC, the Brewers finished tied with Stevens atop the regular season standings.
The Brewers used a balanced scoring attack against the Raptors as five different players registered at least five kills on the day. Leading the way was
Wesley Olstad with eight, while
Kevin Ros,
Zach Bygall, and
Ghali Khalil each had six.
Vassar took the first set easily, after trailing 0-1 after the first point the Brewers took nine of the next 12 points to get ahead 9-4. Bard fought back to make it 10-8, but Vassar got into their swings to take home the first set 25-18.
The second set was even more lopsided as the Brewers erased some of the mistakes they made in the opening frame. Vassar had just three errors in the second en route to .320 hitting. The Brewers led wire-to-wire not allowing the Raptors to get in any type of rhythm.
The third set was a battle between the two sides. The Raptors built themselves a 22-20 lead before the Brewers went on their run. Vassar then strung together four-straight points after an attack error, a Bygall kill, a kill from Olstad, and an ace from Ros. Vassar got the win at the hands of Olstad as he hammered home one last kill to secure the match, 25-23.
The Brewers close out the regular season with three matches at Kenyon Hall next weekend against Messiah, Baruch, and Eastern Mennonite beginning on Friday, April 6 at 7:00 p.m.
