CLAREMONT, CA (March 16, 2018) -- The Vassar College men's tennis team finished its Spring Break action Friday afternoon in California, as the Brewers fell to Trinity College (CT) 7-2 in the first match of the day. Vassar was down 3-0 after doubles action to No. 25 Case Western Reserve University but rain forced the teams to cancel the remainder of the match.
Vassar's two victories both came in singles action, as freshmen
David Gandham and
Nicolas Demaria each picked up individual wins. Gandham, who moved to 10-5 on the year, won the first set in a tiebreak 7-6 (4), and after dropping the second set 7-5, came back in the super-tiebreaker to post a 10-8 victory at No. 1 singles.
Demaria showed some battle and fight at No. 6 singles for the Brewers, as he fell behind in the match after a tough 7-6 loss in the first set. Down 5-1 in the second set and with his back up against the wall, Demaria came out fighting, winning the next six games to send the match to a super-tiebreaker. In the breaker, Demaria was able to outlast Courtland Boyle 10-8.
Vassar (5-7) fell behind early after some highly contested doubles play. The Bantams (2-1) took the early lead in the match at No. 3 doubles, as
Nick Zuczek and
Nicolas Demaria were bested by Christopher Bilicic and Granville Kaynor 8-3.
VC saw its deficit grow to 2-0 after the No. 2 doubles match went final, as sophomore
Dom Demeterfi and junior
Robin Drummond were just edged by Scott Danforth and Kyle Scheffers 8-6. The Brewers desperately needed the final doubles point, and sophomore
Jeremy Auh and freshman
Adam Krueger played a spirited match but were just topped by Courtland Boyle and Rex Glickman at No. 1 singles 8-7.
Trinity moved to within one match of clinching the team decision after Scheffers earned the first decision of singles' play for the Bantams with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Krueger. The clinching point came with the next final, as Danforth knocked off
Jamie Anderson 6-0, 6-2 to make the score 5-0. Auh was right in the first set at No. 3 singles with Kaynor, but a break by Kaynor helped him take the first set to capture a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
The Brewers will return home and host a match for the first time since February 24, welcoming a Liberty League match with Ithaca College Saturday, March 31 in just over two weeks on Josselyn Tennis Courts or Walker Field House depending on the weather.
