Men's Tennis Starts Spring Slate With 6-3 Win At Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY (February 10, 2018) -- The Vassar College men's tennis team rallied from down a break at No. 1 doubles to earn the extra pairs point, and used that momentum into singles to pick up a nice 6-3 regional victory over the University of Rochester in the spring season opener for the Brewers in action from the Indoor Recreation and Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Rochester.

The Yellowjackets (0-2) started the match by earning the first doubles point at No. 2, as Sohaj Somani and Tanmay Thakkar knocked off the Vassar pair of David Gandham and Dom Demeterfi 8-4 to take an early edge. Vassar would even the match at 1-1 thanks to a strong effort at No. 3 from junior Nick Zuczek and Nicolas Demaria, cruising to an 8-5 win over Mattias Hartveit and Damani Eubanks. In the top slot of doubles, Vassar trailed during the match, falling down a break, but battled back to send the match to a tiebreak. In the breaker, Vassar's No. 1 crew of sophomore Jeremy Auh and freshman Adam Krueger nipped Masaru Fukimaki and Peter Huang 7-5 to take a 2-1 lead going into singles.

In singles play, Vassar would add another point to its ledger thanks to a win at No. 4 singles, as junior Jamie Anderson picked up a straight set victory over Huang with score of 6-4, 6-2. VC continued to move towards the needed fifth win at No. 2 singles, as Gandham made the score 4-1 thanks to a 7-5, 6-1 win over Jun Yuminaga. The win was Gandham's team-leading fifth single's win of the season.

The Brewers would clinch the match at No. 3 singles with the next finish, as Auh cam back from being down a set after falling to Thakkar 6-2 in the opening set to claim a 6-4 second set triumph to send the match to a third set. With the stanza tied at four games apiece, Thakkar was forced to retire and in the process pushed Vassar to the team victory.

At No. 1 singles, Fujimaki came back from dropping the first set to Krueger 7-6 (5), rallying for a 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-4 victory to make the score 5-2. With the decision already determined, Vassar would earn its last victory of the match at No. 5 as Demeterfi posted the best comeback of the day. Rochester's Yifan Shen cruised to a first-set, 6-2 win, but Demeterfi wouldn't go away, earning a hard-fought 7-6 win in the second which included a back-and-forth 11-9 win in the breaker, including fending off four match points during the set, to send the match to a super-tiebreaker. In the super, Demeterfi pulled away to earn an exciting 10-5 win to make the final score 6-3 in favor of the Brewers.

Vassar will turn around tomorrow and take on Liberty League foe Rochester Institute of Technology at 3:30 p.m. in action from RIT.
