Pollak Goes Undefeated At Vassar Round Robin

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – While the Brewers split their weekend matches at the Vassar Round Robin, senior Julia Pollak (San Francisco, CA) won all four of her matches at the third position. Three of which were tough five-set contests.

On Saturday, the Vassar women were edged by Boston College and Haverford 4-5 in both contests. The squad bounced back on Sunday by first sweeping Denison 9-0 and then downing Colgate 8-1.

Boston College 5, Vassar 4
The Brewers fought hard in their opening match against Boston College, with three matches going five sets. No. 1 Claire Coss (Penn Valley, PA) kept it close with BC's Sabrina Didizian, but fell 10-12 in the final set for the 2-3 loss. Alessandra Pilkington (New York, NY) opened with a 3-0 sweep against Lulu Berner at the second position.

Pollak went five sets against Anne Marie Green in a back-and-forth bout. In a win-by-two scenario, the senior battled to the 14-12 fifth set victory. Amanda Watson (Falmouth, ME) picked up the sweep with scores of 11-5, 11-4 and 11-8. At the sixth spot, Allegra von Hirschberg (Mbabane, Swaziland) fought back from being down 0-2 to Carol Dickinson by winning 12-10 and 11-3 in the third and fourth sets, but fell in the fifth 6-11.

Haverford 5, Vassar 4
Pollak did not have much rest in her second match, going another five sets against Haverford's Shreya Singh. Pollak won the first 11-3, but Singh followed wins 7-11 and 8-11 wins. Pollak then closed 11-7 and 11-2. The remaining two Vassar victories came in 3-0 sweeps. No. 6 von Hirschberg won 11-7, 11-2 and 11-8, while No. 7 Isabel Bronson (Monterey, MA) took 11-2, 11-4 and 11-7 victories.

Vassar 9, Denison 0
The Brewers picked up the clean sweep against Denison, with every Vassar player going 3-0. Coss picked up her first win of the weekend by downing Maddie Kate Kaufman 11-4, 11-5 and 11-6. No. 5 Alexa Elias (New York, NY), No. 8 Nicole Pihlstrom (Fort Collins, CO) and No. 9 Natalia Lanzoni (Cambridge, MA) also picked up their first weekend victories.

Vassar 8, Colgate 1
Colgate kept things closer than the final score indicates, with six of the nine matches going five sets. Coss edged out Freesia Ferrantino 12-10 in the fifth, while Pilkington came back from losing the first and third sets to pull off the 11-7 final set decision for a 3-1 weekend. Pollak wrapped up her undefeated weekend with her third five-set win over Amanda Gastel. Watson went a close four sets, but fought hard in the fourth for the 3-1 win.

Elias battled five sets in her match, with the fifth ending with a score of 17-15 in her favor. No. 6 von Hirschberg picked up another sweep, while Bronson and Pihlstrom both closed out with five-set victories.

The Brewers have a break until they return to action on Jan. 19 for the Vassar Round Robin III.
