POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (Feb. 7-8, 2018)
– A total of 3,595 donors contributed $190,284 to Vassar College student-athletes during the #27for270 challenge on Feb. 7-8.  Coined #27for27 in the spirit that our 27 teams had 27 hours to get 270 gifts, the challenge, held in conjunction with the Office of Alumnae/i Affairs and Development, was the Vassar Athletic Department's first-ever crowd-funding campaign.

The challenge lasted from 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7 until 12 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8.  Thanks to the generosity of alumnae/i, parents, fans, friends, staff and students, the Brewers blew past their initial goal of 270 donors.  In fact, that goal was reach in little more than an hour at 10:02 a.m., prompting a $10,000 gift from alum and supporter Jim Citrin '81.  In the end, nearly 3,600 people donated over $190,000 to the Brewers Fund.

Teams participated throughout the 27 hours with videos and team challenges among themselves, while outside donors provided challenges, as well.  In fact, Vassar College President Elizabeth Bradley was so impressed by the outreach of support that she sponsored her own $5,000 challenge.  The Brewers earned another $5,000 matching gift from generous parents, while Steve Hankins '85 also saw his $2,700 challenge of getting to 2,200 donors met.

There was also a competition among the teams based on the number of donors compared to size of their alumnae/i group.  The women's golf team won this challenge to earn an additional $5,000 for their program.

"Thank you to the over 3,500 people that donated over $190,000 to our teams, Director of Athletics and Physical Education Michelle Walsh said.  "Our student-athletes, coaches and staff are overwhelmed by your generosity and support."

Vassar will be looking to surpass that total when Brew 2: The Challenge Returns takes place on Feb. 7-8, 2019.
