POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar women's squash team came out strong in their opening match with a 9-0 sweep of Fordham on Saturday morning. The young Brewers squad then fell to No. 28 Mount Holyoke and Georgetown in the afternoon contests.
Vassar 9, Fordham 0
Setting the tone for a tightly contested day, freshman
Claire Coss (Penn Valley, PA) edged out the Rams' Emily Couch 3-2 at the first position. She took the first-two sets 11-7 and 11-8 before Couch rallied for 11-8 and 14-12 wins. Coss then cruised to an 11-6 victory in the final set.
Julia Pollak (San Francisco, CA) dropped her first set at the No. 2 position, but rallied to take the next three against Fordham's Julia Seebode for a 3-1 win. No. 3
Amanda Watson (Falmouth, ME), No. 4
Allegra von Hirschberg (Mbabane, Swaziland), No. 5
Alexa Elias (New York, NY), No. 6
Isabel Bronson (Monterey, MA) and No. 8
Natalia Fischl-Lanzoniv (Cambridge, MA) all had clean sweeps of their opponents.
Rounding out the remaining Vassar wins was
Nicole Pihlstrom (Fort Collins, CO) who won 3-1 at the seventh position and
Lily Hammer (Wethersfield, CT) who edged out Fordham 3-2 at the ninth spot.
Vassar 0, Mount Holyoke 9
The Brewers had a tougher time against the Lyons. Mount Holyoke pulled off a clean sweep of Vassar, and did not allow any match go over three sets.
Vassar 3, Georgetown 6
Coss rebounded from a loss to Mount Holyoke for a 3-2 victory over the Hoyas' Maddy Forbess in the first position. Georgetown then took the No. 2 to No. 6 wins, but Pihlstrom picked up the 3-0 sweep over Meghan Zorc at No. 7. Fischl-Lanzoniv wrapped up the final Vassar win with a close 3-2 victory. The freshman came back from being down 2-1 to win the final sets 11-3 and 12-10.
The Brewers finish the weekend tomorrow against Boston University. Match starts at 9 a.m.
