POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 27, 2018) – The Vassar women's squash team went 1-2 in Liberty League Championship action on Saturday.
They began their morning with a 9-0 win over Bard and followed that up with losses to both William Smith, 0-9, and St. Lawrence, 0-9.
Vassar switched up their normal lineup against the Raptors and still found success. All eight players that played were able to win in three. In the No. 1,
Jiamin Wu handled Francesca Keller, 11-8, 11-3, 11-5. In the second spot,
Alessandra Pilkington took down Francesca Cornali in a tight match, 12-10, 11-9, 11-8. In the third,
Samantha Henderson was able to win 11-4, 11-8, 11-6. Behind her in the fifth was
Emma Glickman who topped Nadia Russell, 11-1, 11-7, 11-8. And to round out the top five,
Kelly Rissman topped Rose Fischer, 11-0, 11-0, 11-1.
It was a tough road the rest of the day for the Brewers as they were not able to win their next two matchups. Against the Herons, the Brewers played close matches with five of them going to four games each. In the top spot,
Hannah Nice was down 2-0 before she took the third game, 12-10, to force the fourth game against Gabby Fraser.
Cherylann Mucciolo forced five games in her match with Djeneba Ballo in the sixth spot. Mucciolo won the second and third games to take the lead, but fell 4-11, 9-11 in the last two.
Emma Glickman had a tight match with Peyton Capute in the seventh spot forcing extra points in two games. Glickman won the first game 11-4, but lost the next three, 10-12, 12-14, 6-11. At No.8, Rissman played four games at the eighth spot against Karina Lazaro. Rissman played tough in the first two, 10-12, 11-13, and won the third 11-8 before falling 4-11. And rounding out the Brewers players was
Julia Pollak at the No. 9. She was able to win the second game, 11-6 and nearly forced a fifth, but fell 10-12 in game four.
Against the Saints the Brewers found limited success. The bottom six spots all lost 3-0 to St. Lawrence. In the top half of the ladder,
Sydney Nemphos played No. 1 and forced five games against Alex Matamoros. Nemphos claimed the first game and the fourth, but fell 7-11 in the deciding game. Wu played as the No. 2, forcing four games after claiming the second game 11-7. And in the third spot, Henderson played four games as she picked up a 11-6 win in the third.
Vassar hosts a pair of matches on Sunday for Senior Day against Connecticut College and Northeastern beginning at 11:00 a.m.
