Brewer Men's Volleyball Rolls Past Neumann Friday

READING, PA (January 26, 2018) -- Freshman Jefferson Waters led all hitters with 12 kills on 18 swings Friday evening, as the Vassar College men's volleyball breezed past Neumann University in straight sets with scores of 25-19, 25-9 and 25-9. 

The Brewers (3-2) hit .449 on the contest, posting 45 terminations on just 78 attacks, erring just 10 times. Vassar fell behind in the opening set 9-6, but rattled off six straight kills including a pair from Waters to take a 12-9 lead. NU (0-7) tied the set at 12-all, and regained a lead at 14-13, but Vassar posted nine of the last 12 points of the first set to take a 1-0 lead. 

Vassar burst out of the gates in the second set, hitting .550 while taking a 10-3 lead early in the second stanza after an ace by Waters. Following a point by the Knights, VC posted five consecutive points capped by a service ace by freshman Sean Hsu to take a 15-4 edge in the second. The Brewers finished off the set with four straight points, sealing the second game with an ace by sophomore Ghali Khalil. 

In the third set, Vassar captured eight of the first nine points, cruising to straight set win thanks to an offensive attack that hit .542 in the third set. Waters hit .500 for the match, adding five digs and two assisted blocks, while Khalil finished with a career-high 10 terminations while swinging at a .500 clip for the match. 

Freshman Wesley Olstad hit .600 for the contest, converting 10 of his 15 swings, posting seven digs as well for the Brewers. Hsu chalked up seven kills and eight digs as well for the Brewers to establish career-highs in both categories, while fellow freshman Ben Brody collected a team-best 11 digs. Junior setter Daniel Halberg dished out 35 assists for the Brewers, also adding two kills and five digs, and sophomore middle hitter Zach Bygall posted four terminations as well. 

The Brewers will take on Loras College and Alvernia University Saturday afternoon in Reading, PA to finish action at the Alvernia Quad.
