POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 3, 2017) – The Vassar College women's soccer team fell by a score of 2-0 to NYU in the 2017 home opener.
"We were outworked by a good squad in the first half and unable to come back from that," said Head Coach
Corey Holton. "The two goals were mental lapses and we can't have that, we've got to lock in for 90 minutes."
The Violets of New York University started the scoring early with a chip shot over freshman goalkeeper
Fiona Walsh in the seventh minute. With Walsh off the back line, Alex Benedict played a high shot that just missed the outstretched arms of the keeper and found its way into the back of the net.
NYU continued to press and outshot the Brewers 8-5 in the opening frame. They walked into the locker room with a 1-0 lead after 45 minutes of action.
Out of the break, the Violet pressure continued and finally broke through the Vassar defense for a second goal. Walsh made a terrific save, but was unable to control the rebound and Charlie Herbertz of NYU collected the ball and put it in the back of the net to give her squad a 2-0 advantage in the 77
th minute.
Vassar continued to play hard, but the Violets defense was stingy in the second frame. The Brewers only managed three shots in the second half while forcing only one save from Michaela Brickley.
Overall, Walsh made seven saves in her second career game while Brickley had five. NYU outshot Vassar 16-8 throughout the game and had the advantage in corner kicks at 7-6.
Audrey Pillsbury had two shots for the Brewers, while five other Vassar players registered a shot as well. Along with Pillsbury,
Gabrielle Deitch,
Dahlia Chroscinski,
Emma Lavelle, and
Amanda McFarland were all able to put a shot on target during the game.
The Brewers are back in action on Gordon Field on Wednesday, September 6 at 4:00 p.m. against Western Connecticut.
