Women's Soccer Falls In Overtime to Western Connecticut

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 6, 2017) – The Vassar College women's soccer team went into overtime for the already the second time in the first three games of the season. This time, they came out on the wrong end of a 2-1 decision against Western Connecticut on a gray and rainy day at Gordon Field.

"We let that one go, said Head Coach Corey Holton. "I thought we had the better of the play for a little while and definitely should have put some goals away."

Fiona Walsh continued to impress in goal as a freshman, racking up 12 saves in the outing. Both teams' offenses fired away in terms of shots as Western Connecticut registered 22 while Vassar had 16.

Pace was a little sloppy due to the rainy conditions once again in Poughkeepsie and that kept both teams at bay in the first half. Neither side would find the back of the net in the opening 45, but each had their share of chances.

Scoring was again at a premium in the second half, but both sides took their shots. At the 83:16 mark, Autumn Sorice crossed the ball into Aileen Maloney for the Colonials and was able to score the first goal of the day.

But the Brewers quickly responded with a goal of their own. Just about 40 seconds later, Carolina Alvarez played a long corner kick into the far post where Dahlia Chroscinski got her foot on it to tie the score at 1-1.

Vassar had one last chance before the end of regulation as Chroscinski once again found her herself with a scoring opportunity, but it was taken away by the keeper, Jillian Fernandez.

In the first overtime period, the Brewers had an immediate chance at goal, but couldn't connect. Then with under 90 seconds remaining in the first extra time, Brooke Hellman ended it for the Colonials. In a crowd in front of the net, Andrea DeVoe found Hellman who buried it for the game-winner.

Vassar stays at home this weekend, playing a pair of matches as part of the VC Invitational. On Saturday, the Brewers host Mount Saint Mary at 11:00 a.m., and on Sunday the team hosts Elmira at 2:00 p.m.
