POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 23, 2017) – The Vassar College women's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie in their Liberty League opener against RIT on Saturday afternoon.
"A good battle today between two really good teams, credit to RIT they played a great brand of soccer and I think we matched up well," said Head Coach
Corey Holton. "It was an unfortunate result, I think in the second half we had the run of play and we should have put away a couple other goals."
Neither side could find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes, but both teams got on the scoreboard in the second half.
Two freshman once again teamed up for the Brewers goal. It was
Ally Thayer who passed it ahead to
Ashley Ferry with a full head of steam running at the goal. Ferry took a few dribbles and fired the ball into the back of the net for her team-leading sixth goal of the season. That score gave Vassar a 1-0 lead with just about 33 minutes left in regulation.
The Brewers defense held strong all game, but the Tigers finally broke through in the 87
th minute. Emily Thiel on the left side line crossed the ball into the box to the head of Sami Alur who made a brilliant finish for the equalizing goal.
The two teams ran for an extra 20 minutes in the two overtime periods combining for another six total shots, but could not manage a score to break the tie.
Fiona Walsh was excellent in cage again for Vassar, making nine saves against 20 total shots.
Vassar's offense managed 15 total shots on the day with six on target.
Audrey Pillsbury led the team with four shots and had some really great opportunities, but was not able to make them count.
The team heads to Bard on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. Liberty League matchup with the Raptors.
