POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 2, 2017) -- The Vassar College field hockey team got two goals from junior
Megan Caveny, as the Brewers earned a hard-fought 3-1 win over SUNY Geneseo Saturday in the title game of the 2017 Betty Richey Tournament from Weinberg Field. In the consolation, Marywood University defeated Manhattanville College 4-1.
The victory for Vassar (2-0) was its fourth straight Betty Richey Tournament title, matching King's College (2006-09) for the longest stretch in tournament history. The Brewers have now earned seven all-time titles, which is just two behind William Paterson University for the all-time most. VC sophomore
Cristina Lopez was named as the Tournament Most Valuable Player, while juniors Caveny,
Alyssa More and
Mikayla Young rounded out VC's All-Tournament Team honorees.
The Brewers wasted no time getting on the board, as Caveny struck just 1:39 into the game thanks to some nice maneuvering from Lopez. The sophomore took a pass at the top of the circle and weaved into the goal mouth where she fed Caveny. The junior pushed a shot through the pads of Knight keeper Mia Ludwig for the opening tally and her first of the season.
VC would keep the pressure on, taking six of the first-half penalty corners, but wouldn't be able to add to its lead thanks to four Ludwig saves. The Brewers outshot their visitors 10-2 in the first half, as the defensive unit from Vassar allowed just a back-to-back sequence from Geneseo's Cara Stafford in the ninth minute.
In the second half, Caveny doubled her goal count thanks to another nifty pass from Lopez, who passed a cross from the goal line over to her teammate for an easy tap-in in front. Geneseo (1-1) would respond with some pressure over the next 10 minutes, and it paid off as Stafford scored an unassisted strike off of a deflection to make the score 2-1. The Knights picked up two penalty corners over the next eight minutes after pulling to within one, but couldn't connect on a shot on either.
In the 63rd minute, Vassar regained its two-goal edge thanks to an insurance goal from junior
Haley Cubell, who knocked in a rebound after a Caveny shot was saved. That would be plenty for the Brewers, who ended up outshooting their guests 19-5 on the afternoon. Vassar edge the Knights 10-6 in the penalty corner department, while Ludwig earned eight stops for Geneseo. Vassar sophomore
Liz Rotolo mad one save, playing 56 minutes in net to earn the win.
Caveny led the Brewers with six shots and three on goal Saturday, while Cubell and More also each had three shots as well. VC did a very nice job on Giovanna Fasanello, who scored twice on Friday evening but was held to just one shot Saturday. Stafford led the Knights with three shot attempts, putting two on goal including her score.
Geneseo's Morgan Maley was named to the All-Tournament Team, joined by teammates Jordan Penkitis and Julia Kim. Marywood University saw Kerri Mountz and Tori Jo Kakusian pick up All-Tournament honors also, while Manhattanville College saw Brooke Hadgraft and Lisa Maxwell garner spots as well.
The Brewers will take their first road trip of the season on Wednesday, September 6, traveling to Union, NJ for a 7:30 p.m. contest with the Cougars of Kean University.
