POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 19, 2017) – The Vassar women's soccer team pushed their winning streak to four straight games after a 6-0 home victory over SUNY New Paltz on Tuesday afternoon.
It was a second half explosion for the Brewers scoring all six goals in the second 45 minutes, including a hat trick by
Savannah Cutler.
"I'm really excited for the amount of goals we scored today, but also for the different people who were putting goals out there," said Head Coach
Corey Holton.
Cutler's hat trick was the first for a Brewer since Kamaria Coley did so against Bard on October 29, 2013. Junior
Audrey Pillsbury knocked in pair of goals, while two-time reigning Liberty League Rookie of the Week
Ashley Ferry tallied a goal and an assist.
Ally Thayer,
Sara Seper, and
Hannah Daley all contributed an assist as well.
Neither side could find the back of the net in the first half. But the Brewers sure did put the pressure on New Paltz getting off eight shots and forcing Megan Tornatore into six saves for the Hawks in the first stanza.
Out of the break, Vassar wasted no time tallying the first goal in the 47
th minute. Ferry had the ball on the right side near the end line and crossed it to Cutler who was cutting in the box and put a foot on it to get it past the keeper.
Twelve minutes later, Seper took a strong shot on goal that Tornatore initially stopped, but Cutler gathered the rebound and knocked it home for a 2-0 Brewer lead. The sophomore's third goal came nearly a minute later as she dribbled into the box from the left side and fired it in.
Two freshmen connected in the 63
rd minute as Daley knocked it to Ferry who was right in front and just needed to put the shot on frame for the easy score.
Pillsbury finished the day with back-to-back goals for the home side in the 67
th and then 79
th minute.
Brenna McMannon took the corner that found Pillsbury as her first shot was blocked, but she got the rebound and put the second shot away for the goal. Thayer assisted on Pillsbury's second goal, she passed it to the junior forward who was streaking down the middle of the field. Pillsbury controlled the pass and beat the keeper for the sixth and final score of the day.
Fiona Walsh made her seventh straight start for the Brewers, making two saves in her 71 minutes of action. Newcomer
Megan Martin came in for the remaining 19 minutes and picked up a save.
The Brewers begin Liberty League action on Saturday when they host RIT on Gordon Field at 3:00 p.m.
