POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 1, 2017) – The Vassar College women's soccer team opened their 2017 campaign with a 2-2 double overtime tie on the road at Montclair State.
"It was a great effort against a quality team tonight," said Head Coach
Corey Holton. "It was a battle and both sides played well and we had our chances. It was a good first test for the team and has given us a good idea of what we can continue to work on."
Five freshmen got a taste of the college game in Friday's match.
Ashley Ferry made the most of her debut, scoring one goal and registering one assist on the day.
Fiona Walsh got her first career start in her very first game playing the full 110 minutes while picking up three saves.
Ferry got the scoring started in the 24
th minute when she collected a pass from
Dahlia Chroscinski and buried it in the back of the net for her first career score.
In the 38
th minute, Montclair tied the score when Tyler Madison scored unassisted for the Red Hawks. With the game knotted at 1-1 the two sides entered the halftime break.
The second stanza scoring began when
Savannah Cutler tallied her first goal of the season in the 54
th minute to give the Brewers the lead. Ferry tallied an assist on the play, notching three points in her debut.
Montclair did not give in as they tied the match in the 70
th minute. Off a corner kick, Melanie Cunha beat the keeper and matched Vassar's two goal output.
The two sides would battle for 20 extra minutes, but neither team found another score ending the game at 2-2. Vassar outshot the home side 11-8 on the day and put six of those shots on frame. The Brewers also held the advantage in corner kicks at 6-5.
Vassar will be back in action on Sunday, September 3 at 1:00 p.m. for their home opener on Gordon Field against NYU. The game will also be the front end of a Vassar soccer double header as men's side will host Mount Saint Mary at 4:00 p.m.
