Vassar Women's Lacrosse Notes — Spring Break

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 7, 2017) — The Vassar College women's lacrosse team (0-1) will fly to Florida to face Stevenson University on Sunday, March 12 at 5 p.m., University of New England on Tuesday, March 14 at 12:30 p.m. and Fitchburg State University on Thursday, March 16 at 10 a.m.

Last Time Out: In a high scoring affair, Vassar was defeated by Drew University in its season-opener at Ranger Stadium on Friday, 15-13. Despite a strong start, the Brewers were unable to overcome a 5-0 Ranger run early in the first half. 
 
A Look at the Brewers (0-1):
  • Olivia O'Loughlin was named to the Liberty League Honor Roll on Monday after her performances against Drew on Friday. The junior middie did it all for the Brewers, totaling team-highs in ground balls (4), created turnovers (2) and draw controls (3) to go along with a goal toward the end of the first half.
  • Brittany Botticelli was also productive across the board, logging two goals, two ground balls and a pair of created turnovers.
  • Storm Sideleau led the attack against Drew, netting a game-best four goals to go along with a ground ball and a draw control. The junior led a late rally, scoring back-to-back goals over the final two minutes of regulation to pull the Brewers as close as 15-13. 
  • Kelly Pushie starred in her collegiate debut against the Rangers, notching a hat trick to go along with a ground ball.
  • Goalkeepers Kristin Caolo and Emily Chancey split time in net against the Rangers. Caolo took the loss after making one save in the first half before Chancey made an additional eight stops in the second.
  • Drew's goalkeeper, Gianna Minogue, made 16 saves to earn the win, as the Brewers outshot the Rangers 29-24 in shots-on-goal.
  • Vassar won 16 draw controls, while Drew only claimed 12.
  • The last two times the Brewers dropped their season-opener, they finished the year with at least 10 wins.
  • The Brewers look to improve upon their 2016 campaign, in which they finished 6-9 overall and 2-7 in Liberty League play.
  • This season, the Brewers are captained by Botticelli and Julia Trudell.
 
A Look at the Mustangs (1-3):
  • The Mustangs are 1-3 on the season with a win over McDaniel and losses to Salisbury, Gettysburg and Montclair State.
  • Before Stevenson faces Vassar, the Mustangs will meet with Washington (MD) on Wednesday, March 8.
  • Over four games, the Mustangs are averaging 9.5 goals and 22.5 shots per game.
  • Fifteen of Stevenson's 38 total goals have been assisted.
  • Brady Heher and Olivia Monteiro have been the primary offensive threats for the Mustangs, accounting for 57 percent of their total points. Heher has 16 points on 11 goals and five assists, while Monteiro has 14 on 10 and four, respectively.
  • Sarah Roerty and Jamie Bittner lead the defensive effort, accounting for 50 percent of the Mustangs' ground balls and 51 percent of their created turnovers. Roerty has 11 ground balls and eight created turnovers, while Bittner has nine and 11, respectively.
  • Mack Ferguson has spent all the time in net for Stevenson. The keeper has allowed 52 goals and stopped 37 for a 42 save percentage.
  • Stevenson looks to improve upon its 2016 season, in which it finished 10-9 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
  • Last season, the Mustangs beat Lebanon Valley before falling to Messiah in the MAC Commonwealth Championship game.
 
Against Stevenson All-Time: The Brewers are 0-2 against the Mustangs, dating back to their first meeting in 1996. Vassar most recently fell 9-7 to Stevenson in the 2015 Spring Break Tour.
 
A Look at the Nor'easters (2-0):
  • UNE is 2-0 on the young season with a 17-11 win at Saint Joseph's (ME) and a 13-9 victory versus Castleton.
  • Before the Nor'easters face the Brewers, they'll take on No. 16 Bowdoin and Southern Maine.
  • The Nor'easters finished the 2016 season 11-7 overall and 6-2 in conference play.  They beat Curry before falling to Endicott in the CCC Semifinals.
  • Through two games this season, the Nor'easters are outshooting opponents 72-46 overall and 55-40 in shots-on-goal.
  • Korinne Bohunsky (6g, 2a) and Nichole Carvalho (5p, 3a) lead the Nor'easters with eight points apiece.  Brooke Kelleher is third in points with seven on four goals and three assists.
  • Bohunsky has been productive across the board, leading the team with 10 draw controls and five created turnovers to go along with six ground balls.
  • Jocelyn Davee has also been productive with five points on three goals and two assists to go along with a team-leading 12 ground balls.
  • Maritza Nary has spent all the time in net for the Nor'easters, making 20 stops for a 50 save percentage.
 
Against UNE All-Time: This will mark the first meeting between the Brewers and Nor'easters.
 
A Look at the Falcons (0-0):
  • Andrea Comeau, Lia Crutchfield, Ali Laferriere and Carrie Long will captain the Falcons this season.
  • Before the Falcons face the Brewers, they'll play Nichols, Johnson & Wales (RI), Transylvania and Curry.
  • Fitchburg State has yet to start its season, but looks to improve upon last year, in which it finished 14-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play.
  • In 2016, the Falcons went 6-2 at home, 8-1 on the road and 0-2 at neutral sites.
  • Fitchburg State graduated a class of three, but welcome a freshmen group of six for this season.
  • Last year, the Falcons outshot opponents 615-420 overall and 493-327 in shots-on-goal.
  • The Falcons return their top three points-earners from 2016, including Laferriere (77p, 54g, 23a), Kayla Panek (51p, 37g, 14a) and Andrea Comeau (45p, 38g, 7a).
  • Last season's goalie, Liz Darrigo, finished with a 54 save percentage on the way, making 176 total stops. This year's keeper is sophomore Marguerite Belcher, who wasn't with the program last season.
  • Darrigo is now the assistant coach, alongside fellow assistant coach Bina Milger. Head coach Rick Terrio is in his 10th season.
 
Against Fitchburg State All-Time: The Brewers beat the Falcons 15-2 in their only meeting during the 2013 Spring Break Tour.
