ROCHESTER, NY (February 4, 2017) — The Vassar College men's squash team (5-10) dropped both of its matches on Day 1 of the Liberty League Championship, falling to host No. 4 University of Rochester 9-0 and Bard College 6-3 in Rochester, NY on Saturday.

Vincent Mencotti, Alex Riccio and Isaac Stuart all picked up wins over the Raptors. At the top of the lineup, Mencotti fought to five sets to top Rhys Nordstrom, 3-11, 11-3, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8; at the seven, Riccio defeated Theo Webb in straight sets, 11-9, 11-3, 11-7; and at the nine, Isaac Stuart took down Simon DeBevoise in four sets, 11-5, 14-12, 11-7. 

Also against Bard, Viraj Nadkarni and Lucas Fifer fought to four sets before ultimately falling to their opponents. Nadkarni lost at the two to Ayateru Maeda, 11-7, 1-11, 11-5, 11-8, while Fifer was dropped at the eight, 7-11, 11-8, 11-1, 12-10.

Earlier in the day against No. 4 Rochester, the Brewers all fell in three sets. Mencotti and Fifer were the only Vassar players to post at least 15 points against their opponents. Mencotti lost 11-7, 11-5, 11-6 to Mario Yanez Tapia at one, while Fifer fell 11-6, 11-3, 11-8 to C. Riedelsheimer at eight. 

The Liberty League Championship continues Sunday, Feb. 5. Vassar will take on St. Lawrence University at 9 a.m. before facing Hobart College at noon. The first match will be held at the Genesee Valley Club, while the second will take place at the Lyman Squash Center on Rochester's campus.
