LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ (February 25, 2017) — The Vassar College women's squash team gutted out a 5-4 win over Bucknell University on Day 2 of the CSA Championships in Lawrenceville, NJ on Saturday.
With the win, the Brewers move to 11-5 on the season, matching the best season in recent history for most wins, as the 2008-09 team finished 11-8. This year's squad still has another match to play, giving the Brewers a chance to remake history.
At the top of the lineup, Hannah Nice took down Kelly Clark in straight sets, 11-7, 11-4, 11-2, while Jiamin Wu fell in a tough match to Sophia Hartman at the two, 11-7, 11-4, 11-9.
Four Brewers challenged their opponents to five sets. Isabelle Bertram beat Anna Hart at the three, 5-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-8, 12-10, while Diana Howland topped Cleo Greenwood at the seven, 9-11, 15-13, 12-10, 7-11, 11-4.
Carly Scher fell in a heartbreaker to Lisel Ferguson at the five, 8-11, 11-9, 12-10, 7-11, 11-5, while Alessandra Pilkington lost in a tough battle to Molly Horning, 4-11, 11-9, 13-11, 7-11, 11-7.
Sydney Nemphos and Emma Glickman fought all the way to four matches. Nemphos stormed back to beat Caroline Fakharzadeh at four, 6-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-6, while Glickman lost in a close one to Homa Gharagozlou at eight, 11-7, 11-0, 8-11, 11-9.
Samantha Henderson also picked up a four-set win in exhibition play over Hannah Yeager, 7-11, 11-7, 11-2, 11-6
"It was a rollercoaster match with a tremendous amount of emotion on both sides," coach David Ames said. "Both teams fought extremely hard."
Vassar returns to the courts for Day 3 of the Championships on Sunday, Feb. 26, facing Connecticut College at 11:15 a.m. The Brewers beat the Camels earlier this season by a 6-3 decision.
