Vassar Women's Squash Notes — CSA Championships

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 22, 2017) — The Vassar College women's squash team (10-4) will finish out its season in the College Squash Association Championships in Princeton, New Jersey. Vassar will start off the weekend facing Mount Holyoke College on Friday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. The Brewers will then go on to compete in either the champions side or the consolation side of the D Division based on the outcome of this match. The full outline of possible games for the Brewers can be found below.

Last Time Out: The Brewers fell to Mount Holyoke College on Saturday, Feb. 11 in an 8-1 finish. This recent loss sets the Brewers up for a rematch Friday and an opportunity to win the season series. (Vassar defeated Mount Holyoke 7-2 in November.)
 
A Look At The Brewers (10-4):
  • The Brewers last win came against Smith College on Feb. 11, 9-0.
  • Hannah Nice is 12-1 on the season, Jiamin Wu is 6-8, Isabelle Bertram is 9-5 and Sydney Nemphos is 11-3.
  • Vassar is coming off its toughest weekend of play yet, earning half of its losses on the season in the Seven Sisters Championships on Feb. 11.
  • The Brewers went 3-2 against teams that will be in the D Division with them this weekend. The Brewers defeated Bucknell University, Connecticut College and Mount Holyoke (in their first meeting), and fell to Wellesley College and Mount Holyoke (in their second meeting).
  • Both Hannah Nice and Jiamin Wu were named to the All-Seven Sisters Team.
  • The Vassar captains are Hannah Nice, Isabelle Bertram and Carly Scher
  • Prior to the Seven Sisters Championships, Vassar had won three in a row against Bucknell University, Boston University, and Haverford University.
 
A Look at Mount Holyoke College (7-16):
  • Mount Holyoke is currently on a four match win streak, defeating Connecticut College, Vassar College, Wellesley College and Smith College.
  • The Lyons defeated Vassar in their last matchup and look to take the season series with a victory this Friday.
  • The Lyons won the Seven Sisters Championship on Feb. 11.
  • This was in large part thanks to Allison Shilling, Amanda Lee and Rose Minichiello, who were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
  • Mount Holyoke is certainly at the high-point of its season, with the 12-match losing streak from December to January seeming long in the past.
  • Brandy Williamson is 7-12 on the season in the one spot, Ragini Ghose is 10-8, Allison Shilling is 7-11 and Lessly Portillo is 6-13.
 
A Look at Bucknell University (7-2):
  • Bucknell comes into the CSA Championships on a two match win streak. The Bison defeated Boston College and Haverford College on Feb. 11.
  • Bucknell fell to Vassar on Jan. 28, 8-1.
  • The Bison's only other loss was against Georgetown University on Feb. 5, 6-3.
  • Caroline Fakharzadeh is 6-3 on the season, Homa Gharagozlou is 7-2, Cleo Greenwood is 7-1 and Lisel Ferguson is 7-2.
  • Most of Bucknell's victories have come in shutouts, and the team tends to struggle in closer matches.
 
A Look at the Colby College (10-15):
  • The Mules fell to Bowdoin in their last match, 5-4.
  • Prior to this, Colby defeated Tufts 7-2.
  • Devin Mullaney is 7-3 this season, Lily Wain is 10-0, Florence Robinson is 6-1, Madiha Molani is 6-4 and Olivia Silverman is 5-4.
  • Colby has wins against Wellesley College, Connecticut College, Northeastern and Hamilton College this season.
  • Elise O'Brien was named the NESCAC Women's Squash Player of the Week on Jan. 23.
