SOUTH HADLEY, MA (February 11, 2017) — The Vassar College women's squash team (10-4) shut out Smith College in between losses to Wellesley College and host Mount Holyoke College at the Seven Sisters Championships in South Hadley, MA on Saturday.
The Brewer women fell 5-4 in their first match with Wellesley, won 9-0 in their second match with Smith and lost 8-1 in their third and final match with Mount Holyoke.
Hannah Nice and Jiamin Wu were named to the All-Seven Sisters Team, as Vassar (1-2) finished third. Mount Holyoke (3-0) took first, Wellesley (2-1) claimed second and Smith (0-3) finished fourth.
Nice was the only Brewer to win all three of her matches, topping Meera Nayar (Wellesley), 9-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-2, 11-1, beating Josephine Surer (Smith), 11-0, 11-0, 11-1, and edging Brandy Williamson (Mount Holyoke), 11-6, 11-7, 11-9. The junior now boasts a team-leading 12-1 mark at the top of the lineup.
Sydney Nemphos, Allessandra Pilkington and Emma Glickman were the only other Brewers to pick up multiple wins. Nemphos took down Ruby Feng (Wellesley) at four, 11-4, 11-7, 11-3, before beating Leah Jeon (Smith) at the same spot, 11-5, 11-9, 11-1. The freshman now owns an 11-3 record.
Pilkington has also been sensational in her freshman campaign, sporting a 12-2 mark after beating Meredith Curry (Wellesley) at the six, 8-11, 11-1, 11-5, 8-11, 11-8, and Amanda Lee (Smith) at the same spot, 11-7, 11-7, 11-2.
Glickman has been effective since her return from study abroad, picking up her fourth and fifth straight wins before dropping her first of the season. The junior eked out an 11-7, 8-11, 5-11, 11-7, 15-13 win over Elena Ubeda (Wellesley) at eight before coming out with an 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 victory over Mieko Kuramoto (Smith) at the same spot.
Also against Smith, Wu defeated Geena Choo at two, 11-4, 11-5, 7-11, 11-8; Isabelle Bertram topped Eva Morgenstein at three, 11-6, 1-4, 11-3; Carly Scher beat Beverly Lipsey at five, 11-4, 11-3, 11-4; Diana Howland took down Stephanie Wang at seven, 11-4, 11-4, 11-1; and Julia Pollak bested Clare McCoy at nine, 11-5, 11-1, 11-2.
The Brewers next compete in the CSA Championships, which will run from Friday, Feb. 24 to Sunday, Feb. 26 at a place and time that are to be determined.
