POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 1, 2017) – The Vassar men's swimming and diving team celebrated Senior Day at their last home meet of the season against the Red Hawks of Montclair State. Due to illnesses, five of the Brewers were unable to compete; yet, the team still put in a great effort before falling, with the final score being 126.5-73.5.
The night began with an exciting 200 Medley Relay. Senior
Anthony Walker overtook Kevin Henningsen in fly, but Vassar finished second in the 200 Medley Relay. Walker would return to the pool to put up fantastic performances in the 200 Free and 100 Fly, posting times of 1:49.54 and 53.38, respectively.
Fellow senior
Chris Cerutti contributed with a fourth place in the 200 Free (1:55.91) as well as a second in the 100 Backstroke (58.74). Junior
Luke Morrison and Senior
Patrick Lai followed for third and fourth places, making it the most successful Brewer event of the night.
Junior
Jonah Strand dominated the pool, with two first places in the 200 IM (1:59.97) and 100 Breastroke (59.42). In the 200 IM, Strand was supported by Morrison, who placed third with 2:09.33; in the 100 Breaststroke, Lai was alongside him with a second place finish in 1:06.13.
The Vassar freshmen powered through the 50 Free event.
Matthew Imiolek tied the Red Hawks' Anthony Kalafatis for second with a time of 23.91 and
Harrison Taylor closely followed for third in 24.08.
Senior
Walter Gabriel swam the 1000 Free (11:35.08) and the 100 Free (56.48), but his final home meet finished strong with in the 200 Freestyle Relay, where he, Morrison, Colletta, and Taylor combined for a 1:37.72, closely following the other Vassar relay of Cerutti, Yaron, Walker, and Imiolek (1:36.01).
"The Vassar men put together some solid races this evening against a strong and deep Montclair State men's team," said head coach
Lisl Prater-Lee. "We could see that some of the things that we are doing in training are the competition pool. With UNYSCSA Championships two weeks away, we are starting to fine tune and pull back on the training. It is an exciting and fun time, we get to see how fast we can be in two weeks."
The Brewers will next swim in the UNYSCSA Championships on February 15
th, 2017 at Ithaca College.
