Sideleau Shines On Senior Day As Field Hockey Cruises Past New Paltz, 7-3

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 28, 2017) – The Vassar College field hockey team celebrated Senior Day Saturday afternoon, honoring its lone senior Storm Sideleau with an emphatic 7-3 victory over Hudson Valley neighbor New Paltz in the regular season finale for both teams from Weinberg Field.

The lone senior for Vassar College definitely enjoyed the day, as Sideleau scored once while chalking up two assists on the day. The Contoocook, NH native came right out of the gate firing for Vassar, nearly opening the scoring just 29 seconds into the game, but New Paltz's Megan Gangwere denied two point-blank chances.

The Hawks (6-11) got the next good scoring chance, as they were awarded a penalty stroke after a save on a penalty corner 4:49 into the game. The Brewers would escape though, as Paige Gladstone's shot missed the right post, going just wide. New Paltz kept the pressure on, but VC was able to deny a strong chance by the Hawk's Hayley Kim 15:51 into regulation.

That would set up the game's opening score, fittingly coming from Sideleau, as she beat two defenders and her shot ripped into the right of the cage to put VC up at 18:05 of the first half. Just over four minutes, as junior Megan Caveny tallied off an assist from sophomore Sam Plante from the right side.

Just 22 seconds later, junior Alyssa More broke away from New Paltz defense and hammered a shot from 15 yards out in front of the cage into the left side of the cage for a 3-0 lead for Vassar. Wasting no time adding to the advantage, Vassar tallied again 1:13 later in the opening half, as junior Emily Poehlein got in on the action with a goal off a Sideleau assist.

The visitors would get the next two goals, as Serena Capsello tallied twice to make the score 4-2, but VC concluded the half with another Caveny tally on a penalty corner feed from junior Mikayla Young to make the count 5-2 at the half. Vassar was efficient in the opening half, as the Brewers scored on five of their 10 shots,

Vassar wasted no time opening the scoring in the second half, as freshman Dara Studnitzer knocked in a rebound off of a More shot to extend the lead to 6-2. More got her second goal of the game to finish the outburst for Vassar at 38:00, as she hammered a shot off a Sideleau feed into the left side of the cage. New Paltz scored a goal from Justine O'Reilly, but it wasn't enough as VC rolled to the win. With the victory, Vassar posted its third undefeated home schedule in the last five seasons, going 10-0 on Weinberg Field this year.

New Paltz held a lead in penalty corners for the game, receiving eight to the five of VC, but Vassar slightly outshot its visitors, 20-19. Sophomore Liz Rotolo made four saves for Vassar in 35:00 minutes of action, while junior Paige Amico stopped a pair of attempts. Freshman Madison Maguire also made one stop in 3:35 of action. Gangwere chalked up eight saves for the Hawks.

Vassar's regular season is now finished, but the Brewers will compete in the 2017 Liberty League Tournament as the No. 3 seed on Wednesday afternoon, taking on Skidmore College at 3 p.m. in Saratoga Springs, NY.
