Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

William Smith Downs Vassar on Senior Day

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 21, 2017) – The Vassar women's soccer team lost their second straight league game on Saturday, falling to No. 4 William Smith, 4-0, on Gordon Field.

"In the second half, the team just needed to believe in what we were doing and believe in the way we play and not to give up, and I think they did that," said Head Coach Corey Holton. "But it was a span of 15 minutes where we didn't do that and that's where the trouble came in the first half. I think generally speaking we came out in the second half realizing we could play. They're a great side, a great group, and to know that you can play with them for 45 minutes is an excellent feeling and hopefully we can take that into the next one."

On senior day, the Herons did not let the celebration trickle into the game as they went up 3-0 just 12 minutes into the match. Their first goal came less than a minute into the contest from Evie manning. She took a pass at dribbled right down the center of field, taking a shot from the top of the box and right over the keeper.

Less than five minutes later, the Herons struck again. This time, Manning fed the pass to Merilyn Hinrichs and she finished for the goal inside the box. Hinrichs was at it again in the 12th minute, when she dribbled past the Brewer defense and forced the keeper to step out and put it over her for the score.

Vassar seemed to regain their composure for the remainder of the half, but William Smith kept attacking and broke through for a fourth time with just three minutes left before the break. Clare O'Connor brought in the corner kick that found the head of Elizabeth Moore as she finished for the fourth goal of the day.

The Brewers regrouped at the half and made some changes to their lineup that paid off as they kept William Smith scoreless for the final 45 minutes.

In all, Vassar only got off six shots, while William Smith had 17. Leading the Brewers was Amanda McFarland with three and Dhalia Chroscinksi with two.

Fiona Walsh made four saves on the day, all coming in the second frame.

Vassar has two more regular season matches, taking on RPI at home on Wednesday, October 25 before heading to Ithaca on Saturday to close out the season.
