POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 25, 2017) – The Vassar women's soccer team ended their two-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over RPI on Gordon Field on Wednesday afternoon.
"We knew it was going to be a good matchup, we knew that RPI was a good squad," said Head Coach
Corey Holton. "It's feeling good, we're just going out there trying to finish out the season the way we want to. We control everything about our destiny so that's we're trying to do."
Vassar now stands with a 5-2-1 mark and 16 points in the Liberty League standings. With a win in their final game on Saturday, the team would clinch the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
This afternoon's match, started slow as much of the play was in the midfield in the first 45 minutes. The two teams combined for just nine shots in the first half, with Vassar's two on target being the only ones.
The Brewers made their adjustments in the locker room and came out with some offensive control. It took just about six minutes for Vassar to net their goal. In the 52
nd minute,
Amanda McFarland lined up a free kick just outside the box on the right side.
She stepped back and then fired a shot into the upper left part of the goal for the VC score. It was the senior's sixth goal of the season and her 15
th point in 2017.
For the remainder of the contest, the Brewers were content to control the ball and keep possession away from the Engineers. RPI definitely had their chances firing off 16 shots, but they were off the mark as only three were on target.
Fiona Walsh played well in cage, picking up her ninth win of the season while making three saves.
McFarland led the offense with three total shots, while
Ally Thayer and
Sara Seper each had two.
The Brewers close out the regular season on the road for a critical league matchup with Ithaca on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
