SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (October 13, 2017) – Skidmore College's Mary Beth Zahnleuter scored the second of her two goals with just over eight minutes to play, breaking a 1-1 tie to give the hosting No. 16 Skidmore College Thoroughbreds a 2-1 victory over the Vassar College field hockey team in Liberty League play from Wagner Park.
The Brewers outshot the Thoroughbreds for the game, holding Skidmore (10-4, 4-0 Liberty League) to its lowest shot total in conference play this year. It was the penalty corner execution though that made the difference, as Skidmore scored on both of its chances from the end line to earn the victory. The Brewers earned six penalty corners on the contest, including one with three minutes to play, but couldn't get a shot off.
The first half saw the hosts come out of the gates controlling the action, as Skidmore took the first two shots, both requiring saves by the Brewers. The second chance came after a rebound of a Zahnleuter shot, as Gabby Hyman had a glorious attempt stopped by freshman defender
Nikki Pallotta off the goal line.
Vassar would start to get its footing from there, taking the game's next five shots before the intermission. VC's first attempt on goal came in the 27
th minute off of a penalty corner, as a
Megan Caveny shot was saved by T-Bred keeper Elizabeth Coughlin. Vassar earned two more penalty corners before the break, but neither earned a shot as the game went into halftime scoreless.
The Brewers got the scoring going in the 46
th minute of action, as VC was rewarded for its pressure with an
Emily Poehlein goal to make the game 1-0 VC. The score for the junior was her seventh of the season, as it came off of an assist from freshman
Natalie Johnston off a change of direction in front.
Skidmore would start to get its attack going after the goal, as Sarah Winters had a shot saved by VC's
Liz Rotolo, setting up a penalty corner. The Thoroughbreds equalized on the ensuing end line opportunity, as Zahnleuter drove in a pass from Seeley Fancher for her third tally of the season.
Vassar wouldn't go away though, taking the next four shots including two great chances by Caveny in the 59
th minute, but Skidmore escaped unscathed to set up the eventual game-winner by Zahnleuter. Rotolo made two stops in net for the Brewers (7-5, 2-2 Liberty), while Coughlin finished with four saves for Skidmore.
Vassar's
Alyssa More and Caveny each led all players with three shots apiece, while Poehlein also finished with a pair of attempts. With the loss, Vassar dropped to 1-5 on the road this year.
The Brewers will return home to Weinberg Field Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. for Liberty League play, taking on St. Lawrence University in a pivotal conference matchup with the Saints (5-8, 1-4 Liberty).
