Field Hockey Posts Overtime Win Over St. Lawrence Sunday

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 15, 2017) – Vassar College junior captain Megan Caveny scored 4:28 into overtime on her 11th shot of the game, giving the Brewer field hockey team a 2-1 Liberty League victory over St. Lawrence in action from Weinberg Field.

With the win, Vassar College moved to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the Liberty League while St. Lawrence fell to 5-9 and 1-4 in conference action. The victory was also Vassar's 15th straight conference win on Weinberg Field, dating back to 2013, while VC kept its home record perfect at 7-0.

It wasn't easy though, despite the large discrepancy in shots, penalty corners and general possession throughout the contest. Vassar outshot its visitors 38-3 for the contest, and earned 22 of the game's 25 penalty corners but the Saints were able to deny Vassar on the majority of their chances.

It didn't look like that would be the case early on though, as the Brewers jumped out of the gate quickly, as senior Storm Sideleau buried her fourth goal of the season thanks to a nice set up by junior captain Alyssa More to make the score 1-0 just 2:27 into play. VC kept the pressure on in the first half, outshooting the Saints 19-0 and being awarded all 11 corners but SLU thwarted all chances before the break.

After intermission, the Saints took advantage of their first penalty corner of the contest, as Lucy Stillman inserted to Molly Wood, who fed a ball inside for a deflection from Tori Shaffer to make it 1-1. The goal was Shaffer's seventh of the season on St. Lawrence's first shot of the game.

Vassar would have a plethora of scoring chances before the end of regulation, but SLU's defenders were tenacious in blocking shots, with 10 shots being stopped before they could get to Saint keeper Sophie Cardenali. St. Lawrence had a chance to win the game in regulation, but a penalty corner with just over a minute to play was well defended by the Brewers.

In the 7-on-7 overtime period, both teams traded possession early before the patience of the Brewers paid off. More restarted and drive the end line before shoveling a pass across the goal mouth to Mikayla Young, who had her attempt in front deflected and saved by Cardenali. The ricochet of the save landed at the stick of Caveny, who pushed her shot through the keepers legs and barely over the goal line before a diving Melissa Grosshans could knock it out of the goal.

The win was Vassar's first overtime victory of the season, having lost its previous two extra session games. It was also a contest that saw Vassar persevere through some injuries through the contest. Also with Sunday's triumph, The Brewers can now clinch a playoff spot with either a win at home Friday afternoon against Ithaca College or a road victory at Union College next Sunday.

Caveny led all players with 11 shots on the day, putting four on goal, while More added seven attempts as well. Junior Paige Amico and Liz Rotolo split duties in net for the Brewers, as Rotolo made one save in earning the win. Cardenali stopped 12 shots in cage for SLU, and Wood and Cate MacKenzie each had defensive saves.
