Field Hockey’s 20-Game Home Win Streak Snapped In 2-1 Overtime Loss to Kean

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 7, 2016) – Kean University's Kayla Molnar knocked in a deflected shot just 2:44 into overtime, giving the visiting Cougars a 2-1 victory over the Vassar College field hockey team, snapping a 20-match home win streak for the Brewers in the process.

Vassar hadn't suffered a defeat on Weinberg Field since October 31, 2013, a 5-1 defeat at the hands of New Paltz. This game was much different than that rainy Halloween evening, as defense was on display all night for both teams.

That's not to say that there wasn't action, as the night heated up almost immediately for the Brewers. Vassar College scored on its first shot of the game just 55 second into the contest, as sophomore Haley Cubell knocked in a pass from Megan Caveny for the early lead. The goal was the second-fastest goal in program history, eclipsed only by a Dara Davis tally against Morrisville back in 2012 that took 52 seconds.

On the play, Mikayla Young self-started on right wing and pushed a pass to senior Lauren Shumate, who one-timed a pass into Caveny just inside the arc. Caveny carried the ball to her left and backhanded a pass to Cubell, who was left all alone on the backside for the tip-in goal.  It was Cubell's first collegiate goal, while the assist was Caveny's first of the 2016 campaign.

Kean responded by holding the Brewers in their own end, and the first penalty corner of the game for the Cougars provided a great chance, but Krista LaMaina had her attempt denied by sophomore keeper Paige Amico. In the 25th minute, Shauna LaMaina fired a high, lofting shot towards the cage, but Amico jumped and paddled the ball over the cross bar for an acrobatic save.

Vassar went right back on the offensive after that, and nearly made the score 2-0 but shots from Hayley Beach and Caveny were both saved off the line be defender Katie-Lynne Lussier. At the end of the half, a penalty corner for Kean nearly drew the game even, but Vassar's defense was able to push the ball out of the circle to end the period.

After intermission, Kean would finally break through thanks to a great effort from Krista LaMaina, who fired three shots in a row. After Amico denied the first two attempts, the rebound of the second shot came right back to LaMaina who knocked it inside the right post to tie the game at one. Vassar's best chance of the second half came on a penalty stroke in the 59th minute, but Alyssa More's attempt was thwarted by Erin Smith.

After that, Amico was once again asked to make two incredible saves with five minutes to go, and the sophomore came through to deny Lia DiPiazza and LaMaina of potential game winners. In overtime, Cubell would give VC a chance, but her tip of a shot was saved by Smith. Two minutes later, Molnar would end the game, corralling a loose ball off a rebound and tucking it under a diving Amico for the win.

Vassar was outshot 15-10 on the evening, but earned six of the game's 10 penalty corners. Amico finished with nine saves on the game, while Smith tallied the five stops in the victory.

The Brewers will look to start a new home win streak on Saturday at noon, battling the Golden Eagles of The College of Brockport in non-conference action on Weinberg Field.
