Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Bracken, Tavakkol Lead Field Hockey Past Brockport Saturday

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 10, 2016) – Senior Emma Bracken dished out four assists, and sophomore Gracie Tavakkol had five points as the Vassar College field hockey team breezed past The College at Brockport 9-0 Saturday in action from Weinberg Field.

The Brewers (3-1) were persistent all day offensively, getting on the scoreboard at 11:54 of the opening half thanks to the first collegiate goal from freshman Cristina Lopez, who deflected a shot by Alyssa More for the tally. Eight minutes later, senior Hayley Beach got on the board for the first time this season, knocking in a loose ball of a shot from Bracken to make the score 2-0.

Beach wasn't done though, as she scored less than two minutes later, collecting a loose ball off a shot from sophomore Megan Caveny and potting it in the cage to put Vassar up three. The Brewers would take that lead to the half, having outshot the Golden Eagles (1-2) 16-1 during the opening half.

In the second, Vassar poured in six goals, starting just 1:20 into the second period, as Mikayla Young inserted on a corner and went to the back post where she would one-time a pass from Caveny for the fourth score of the day.

Vassar made the game 5-0, as More gathered a pass from Bracken off a penalty corner and blasted it into the right side of the cage on a gorgeous corner play. Tavakkol would take over for the rest of the game for the Brewer offense, as she scored her second of the season at 62:28 of the game on a pass from Bracken.

The pairing would connect again nearly four minutes later, as Bracken played a pass across to Tavakkol, and the sophomore calmly deposited the tally into the cage for a 7-0 lead. Tavakkol would then play the role of facilitator, setting up fellow sophomore Emily Poehlein. On the play, Poehlein's strategic deflection paid off, as it flew right by the Brockport keeper for the goal. Sophomore Haley Cubell would finish off the scoring on the day, as she fired a pass from Bracken to the right of the cage for the tally.

The nine goals in a game were the most for the Brewers since October 5, 2013, when Vassar chalked up 11 on Morrisville State. Vassar outshot Brockport 34-1 Saturday, and earned all 20 penalty corners for the game. Golden Eagle keepers Olivia Landry and Sarah Beam combined for 16 saves, while Paige Amico and Liz Rotolo each played 35 minutes to share the shutout.

The Brewers will be back in action this upcoming Wednesday, heading to Western Connecticut State University at 7 p.m. for their first road contest of the season.
