POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 5, 2016) — After starting the season with two wins on the road, the Vassar College men's soccer team will have its home opener on Tuesday, September 6. The Brewers will host the Valiants of Manhattanville College on Gordon Field for a 4 p.m. tilt.

Last Time Out: The Brewers won their first two games by two goals each, beating Western Connecticut State University 3-1 on Sept. 1 and Mount Saint Mary College 2-0 on Sept. 4. In their most recent outing, Toby Stansell scored the game-winner in the 20th minute, thanks to a pass from Mattie Mrlik, before assisting on Jose Novas' goal in the 84th minute.
A Look At The Brewers:
- Vassar graduated a senior class of 10, but added a talented freshman group of eight, including standouts Mattie Mrlik and Henrik Olsson, who have both already earned substantial playing time.
- Tanner Sands currently leads the offensive effort with four points on two goals this season. Both goals came in Vassar's 3-1 Opening Day win at Western Connecticut on Sept. 1.
- Mattie Mrlik, Jose Novas and Toby Stansell have also greatly contributed on the offensive end, as they have collected three points apiece on a goal and an assist.
- Mattie Mrlik and Jose Novas have both registered at least a point in every game. Mrlik tallied a goal in his first outing and an assist in his second, while Novas recorded an assist in his first and a goal in his second.
- Goalkeeper Matt Marcelino started in the cage for the Brewers in both of their contests. The junior holds a 2-0 record, including a clean sheet, after making five saves.
- Vassar has maintained possession during competition, outshooting opponents by 11 shots, 27-16.
- The Brewers have been more concise in their shooting, holding a shots-on-goal percentage of 48 (13-27) to their opponents' 39 percent (6-16).
- The Brewers have capitalized on penalties, finding the back of the net on two of two attempts.
- The Brewers look to build upon last season, in which they finished 8-6-2 overall and 4-4-0 in the Liberty League.
A Look At The Valiants:
- The Valiants are 2-0 on the season after earning 2-0 wins at Elms on Sept. 1 and versus New York University on Sept. 3.
- Manhattanville also boasts a young team, adding 11 freshman this season. First-year players Felipe Gallo, Tim Carsting, Christian Araujo, Konnor Kesselring and Mateo Herron have already registered at least 100 minutes over two games.
- Senior Omar Parra leads the Valiants offensively with six points on three goals. He tallied two in their season-opening win versus Elms before adding a score against NYU. In each game, Parra's goal was the game-winner.
- Sophomore Oskar Martinsson has two points on the young season after scoring against NYU on Sept. 3.
- Goalkeeper Tim Casting has registered 11 saves for a 2-0 record, both wins being shutouts.
- Freshman Nicholas Capri and junior Robin Schaufele have each tallied a point on an assist.
- Manhattanville opponents have been more efficient than the Valiants, holding a shots-on-goal percent of 55 (11-20) to their 37 percent (15-41).
- Manhattanville went 1-1-1 in last season's ECAC Division II Metro/Upstate Tournament, beating Stockton 2-1, drawing with Alfred 1-1 and falling to Rutgers-Newark 3-0. The Valiants finished the season 10-7-5 overall and 3-1-3 in MAC Freedom play.
Against Manhattanville All-Time: The Brewers hold an all-time record of 17-7 versus the Valiants. Vassar won three in a row before most recently falling at Manhattanville 2-1 on Sept. 9, 2015.
