POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 29, 2016) – Freshman
Jane McLeod pounded down 18 kills, while sophomore
Devan Gallagher added 16 terminations as the Vassar College women's volleyball team knocked off Hunter College in four games in action from Kenyon Hall Thursday evening. VC won with scores of 22-25, 25-22, 25-13 and 25-18.
"
We were definitely slow in the first set, and Hunter challenged us and we were out of system but we came together as a team looked to each other as a team, and pulled out the win," said Gallagher.
The Brewers (12-6) started slow, both offensively and defensively, and allowed a gritty, tough Hunter team to hang in the match. The Hawks took full advantage of the slow start by the Brewers, hitting .226 in the opening set to earn an early match lead. VC made nine errors offensively in the opening set, allowing for the quick start by the Hawks.
The second set saw the emergence of the Vassar offensive attack, as McLeod pounded down eight kills in the period while senior
Gabby Miller finished with five of her own. The Brewers posted 18 terminations as a team, and
Sierra Tobin added nine digs in the period to help VC pull away. Sophomore
Annie MacMillan also had three aces in the game.
With the match tied at one, Vassar again leaned on its offensive firepower, hitting .500 in the game thanks to five kills from Gallagher and four more from Miller. VC also got a spark off the bench in the form of
Bria Corham, who chalked up three aces and three kills in the game. In the final set, VC's defense held Hunter to -.077 hitting and McLeod registered six kills to put the match away.
Vassar hit .289 as a team offensively (.289), while five players finished the match with seven or more kills. McLeod continued to punish the ball, posted her 18 kills on 33 swings, hitting .455 with five digs defensively. Gallagher also had five digs with her 16 kills, hitting .278, and Miller had another double-double with 12 kills, 11 digs and three aces.
Sophomore
Annie MacMillan had another banner day for the Brewers, finishing with 54 assists, eight digs and three aces, while
Alex Sams also had seven terminations and three assisted blocks. Corham needed two sets to tally seven terminations on 11 swings with no errors, also posting three aces and two assisted blocks.
Tobin was the top defensive player for VC with 18 digs, and
Jorden Schreeder posted two aces and six digs herself. The Brewers 63 kills were the most all season in any match for Vassar, while the 53 assists by MacMillan tied a career-high.
"Despite struggling in stretches and not adjusting well to a tough defensive team, we put a "W" on the board," said head coach
Jonathan Penn. "Our goal is to improve every time we take the court and we'll be looking to keep doing that on Saturday."
The Brewers will be back in action in Kenyon Hall on Saturday for a non-conference tri-match, hosting John Jay College at 11 a.m. and Rutgers-Camden at 3 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, NY.
