Women’s Volleyball Continues Dominance With Wins Over John Jay, Rutgers-Camden

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 1, 2016) The Vassar College women's volleyball team completed a perfect stretch of matches in this weekend's tri-match play against John Jay College and Rutgers University-Camden, dispatching both teams in straight sets in non-conference action in Kenyon Hall. VC rolled over John Jay 25-7, 25-9, 25-8 and ended the day against Rutgers-Camden with a 25-16, 25-15, 25-11 win.

Vassar has now won 14 of its last 15 games and is 7-1 in Liberty League play. The Brewers showcased their strong offense, averaging .311 in hitting % against John Jay and .330 against Rutgers-Camden, while the opponents only hit -.164% and .080 respectively. VC got a total of 73 kills on the day, while the opponents totaled 33 total kills.

"We started off strong, and get even better every set, said junior Alex Sams. "We kept our offense really versatile, we ran a lot of plays which was nice and just pretty good games overall."

Vassar came out strong and dominated the match in aces and kills. Sophomore Annie Macmillan and senior Sierra Tobin both achieved four service aces, with junior Alex Sams scoring three. The Brewers posted 31 kills, with seven from sophomore Bria Corham and six from Sams and sophomore Devan Gallagher.

The Brewers dominated the first set, keeping John Jay to only seven points. VC went on a six-point streak at the end of the set to clinch it, with senior Gabby Miller scoring all but one of the points and scoring two consecutive service aces.

The second set saw the Brewers continue to show their strength. Tobin scored three consecutive service aces near the start of the set, putting VC up 7-1. Vassar stayed focused throughout the set, which resulted in John Jay's longest streak being four. The Brewers hit an impressive game high of .357% in this game, leading them confidently into the third and final set.

The Brewers made short work of the John Jay squad in the third game, with sophomore Lauren Ninkovich setting kills by Corham and sophomore Lydia Bailey.  Sams finished off the match with an impressive kill, and the Brewers came away from the set 25-8.

The Vassar squad chalked up 25 assists, with 14 from MacMillan and nine from Ninkovich. The Brewers also out-blocked John Jay 4-1 with two blocks each from Gallagher and senior Sarah Roberts, and one from freshman Jane McLeod.

Vassar 3, Rutgers-Camden 0
The Raptors of Rutgers-Camden put up more of a fight against the Brewers, but ultimately fell 3-0. McLeod showed her strength by chalking up 12 kills total, while MacMillan touted a 33-assist match against the Raptors. The Brewers posted 10 total service aces as well, with three from Miller, while Rutgers-Camden only posted one.

In the first set, the Brewers came out strong and doled out 14 kills on the game. McLeod smashed two hits for the last two points of the set, while Rutgers-Camden scored nine points off kills and hit .133%, its match-high.

Moving into the second game, the Brewers scored an immediate three points, including a service ace by freshman Jorden Schreeder. The Raptors struggled with hitting throughout the set, posting a .000 hitting percentage.

VC made short work of the Raptors in the third set, and also hit a very impressive .455% on the game—Rutgers-Camden only hit .080% on the set. Vassar had 18 total kills on the game, and finished off the domination with a resounding kill by Gallagher.

Miller and MacMillan both posted six digs, while Tobin posted 10. Miller also posted eight kills with Gallagher posting nine.

"I think we put together a couple nice matches," said head coach Jonathan Penn. "It can be challenging when your comfprtable and confident that you're playing well to continue to do so, They were good at contining their intensity and focus and played pretty well."


The Brewers trek to Hoboken, NJ on Wednesday to take on Stevens Institute of Technology in their next match. The game will take place at 7 p.m.
