Last Time Out: Vassar remains undefeated through six games, settling for a 0-0, double-overtime draw with New Paltz at Gordon Field on Wednesday. Vassar goalkeeper
Matt Marcelino logged a clean sheet with four saves, as did John Guzzo, who made five stops for New Paltz (3-0-3). This marks the second shutout for Marcelino.
A Look At The Brewers (5-0-1):
- Vassar is undefeated through the first six games for the first time since 1994. Senior captain Noah Bloch is the only Brewer who was born before that season, in which Vassar finished 14-2-1 overall, including an ECAC NY-NJ Metro Region Championship. Bloch was just eight days old when the magical season commenced.
- As of Sept. 13, Vassar ranks fourth in the East of the NSCAA NCAA Division III poll, only behind St. Lawrence University, University of Rochester and SUNY Cortland. The Brewers also received votes in the NSCAA NCAA Division III national poll.
- The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced its Players of the Week for the week ending in Sept. 11 on Tuesday, and Vassar men's soccer players Tyler Gilmore and Mattie Mrlik landed spots on the exclusive list.
- The Liberty League announced its Players of the Week on Monday, and Hayden Van Brewer was named Offensive Performer of the Week, Tyler Gilmore was tabbed Defensive Performer of the Week and Mattie Mrlik was pegged Rookie of the Week.
- Ten different Brewers have found the back of the net, including freshman forward Mattie Mrlik, who leads the offensive effort with nine points (three goals, three assists) on the season.
- Tanner Sands has also greatly contributed on the offensive end, logging seven points on three goals, including a game-winner, and an assist.
- The Brewers have outshot opponents 109-57 overall and 49-19 in shots-on-goal. Of the Brewers' 16 goals on the season, 13 have been assisted.
- Goalkeeper Matt Marcelino has started in net for the Brewers in all six of their contests. The junior has conceded just two goals, while making 17 stops for a 5-0-1 record, including two clean sheets.
- The Brewer defense has been phenomenal, shutting out four teams so far in Mount Saint Mary College (Sept. 4), William Paterson University (Sept. 10), Elms College (Sept. 11) and New Paltz (Sept. 14).
A Look At The Red Dragons (3-2-0):
- The Red Dragons ride a three-game winning streak into Saturday's meeting with the Brewers, having beaten Dickinson 5-1, Manhattanville 2-1 and most recently RPI 1-0.
- Oneonta is 3-0 at home and 0-2 at away/neutral sites. Three of the next four games are at home for the Red Dragons, beginning with Vassar.
- Eight different Red Dragons have found the back of the net, led by Hans Purtell, who leads the team with six points on three goals.
- Alejandro Ruiz, Witman Hernandez and Zachary Southworth have also greatly contributed on the offensive end, each totaling four points on a goal and two assists.
- Ryan Wilson has been Oneonta's primary goalkeeper, starting four games for a 3-1-0 record, including a shutout. Wilson has allowed three goals, while stopping 10. Mike Gaffary has also spent time in net, starting against Washington & Lee (Sept. 4) for a 0-1-0 record. Gaffary allowed three goals, while making three saves.
- The Red Dragons have outshot opponents 63-37 overall and 30-19 in shots-on-goal. Nine of their 10 goals have been assisted.
- The Red Dragons finished last season 19-3-2 overall and 8-1-0 in conference play. They enjoyed a six-game winning streak during the regular season, as well as a 10-game winning streak that bled into the postseason.
- In 2015, Oneonta shut out Plattsburgh State and Brockport by 3-0 margins to win the SUNYAC Tournament Championship.
- In the 2015 NCAA Tournament, Oneonta beat The City College of New York, Rutgers-Camden, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Haverford College before falling to Amherst College 4-3 in penalty kicks in the National Semifinal on Dec. 4.
Against Oneonta All-Time: Vassar is 0-2-2 versus Oneonta all-time, most recently settling for a 1-1, double-overtime draw at home on Sept. 12, 2015.
