DANBURY, CT (September 14, 2016) – Sophomore midfielder
Alyssa More tallied her first career hat trick on Wednesday evening, propelling the Vassar College field hockey team to an emphatic 6-0 win at Western Connecticut State University in non-conference road action.
The hat trick completed by More was the first three-goal game for a Brewer field hockey player since
Lauren Wiebe tallied three in a game October 5, 2013 at Morrisville State. It was the first time in over 17 years that a Vassar player has completed a natural hat trick, scoring all three goals in the same period. More also moved into the team lead with four strikes on the season.
The contest started quickly for the Brewers, as More hooked up with another sophomore in
Megan Caveny for a 1-0 lead. Caveny on the play made a move off of a penalty corner, and fed More on the back post for an easy stuff. That came after attempts by
Storm Sideleau and
Lauren Shumate were denied with defensive saves.
In the 23
rd minute, More potted her second goal, and followed that up with another to complete the hat trick at 28:59. Freshman
Cristina Lopez had an assist on the goal. Vassar outshot its hosts 9-0 in the opening period, chalking up four penalty corners.
After the halftime, VC continued to pressure WCSU (2-3) keeper Kristy Trotta, peppering her with 19 shots in the closing half. The Brewers added to their lead just 3:55 into the second half, as sophomore
Mikayla Young scored an unassisted, collecting a deflected shot by Caveny and depositing it home.
Caveny would get her second of the second a little bit later, as she one-timed a loose ball right in front of the cage past Trotta for the score. The final score of the game for Vassar came with 10:13 left, as
Lauren Shumate made some slick moves and drove a ball towards cage just inside the circle. Sophomore
Haley Cubell screened everyone in front, and the ball skipped past everyone into the cage to give Shumate the strike.
The was more than enough offense for Vassar (4-1), as the Brewers ended up outshooting the Colonials 28-0 on the contest. Over the last 140 minutes of field hockey, Vassar has outshot its opponents 62-1, while posting 15 goals over that span. VC also won the penalty corner battle Wednesday, 11-0.
Caveny once again paced the Brewers in shots, as she finished with eight total and six on net.
Emma Bracken had six shots and three on net. More needed just her three shots to score three times, while sophomore
Paige Amico and freshman
Liz Rotolo split halves to earn the shutout. It was Vassar's fourth shutout of the season, while only allowing two scores through five games.
Trotta finished with 11 saves for the Colonials, while Erika Wixted and Melissa Krim each posted a defensive stop.
"It was a team effort from the first whistle," said head coach
Michael Warari. "Our communication, ball speed, and stick to stick passing are getting better in every game, and that's really exciting to see."
The Brewers return to action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. on Weinberg Field, hosting the Roadrunners of Ramapo College in more non-conference action.
