POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 17, 2016) – Junior forward
Storm Sideleau tallied three goals and an assist as the Vassar College field hockey team breezed past the Roadrunners of Ramapo College in action from Weinberg Field Saturday afternoon.
The hat trick for Sideleau was her first of her career, while it marked the second consecutive game that Vassar has chalked up a hat trick, as
Alyssa More achieved the feat Wednesday at Western Connecticut. It was the first time in the last 17 years that Vassar has posted back-to-back hat tricks.
"I thought today was a really good team victory," said Sideleau. "Our passes were connecting, our press was great today."
Vassar (5-1) jumped out on top in the 10
th minute on a
Storm Sideleau strike, her first of the season with help from freshman
Cristina Lopez. On the play, Sideleau made a run behind the Ramapo (2-3) defense and Lopez slipped a ball to Sideleau,
who ran in all alone and blasted a shot past Emily Wisneski of RC for the goal.
Sideleau was back at it 11 minutes later, as More pushed a pass through the
Roadrunner keeper's legs, and Sideleau pushed it home for a 2-0 Vassar lead. Sophomore
Megan Caveny added to Vassar's lead in the 23
rd minute on a nifty play, as a shot from Sideleau was saved into the air, but
Caveny connected on her baseball swing to whip the ball into the left side of the cage for the score.
Vassar wasn't done before the half, as another VC player got onto the scoresheet for the season. Freshman
Sabrina Stacks benefited from another tenacious play from Sideleau,
who fed the newcomer on the right post and Stacks rammed the shot home for the tally. Stacks became the 12
th player on the roster to score a goal this season.
After the break, Vassar continued to pressure the Roadrunners and Sideleau would complete the hat trick after senior
Hayley Beach created the opportunity. Beach dribbled into the circle, and shot on cage, but
the rebound fell to Sideleau and she calmly deposited it home for the three-goal game.
The final goal of the game might have been the prettiest for the Brewers, as
Mikayla Young fed Young 10 yards in front of the cage. The freshman one-timed the pass from Young to the back post,
where sophomore Emily Poehlein knocked the pass into the net on her first touch for the pretty score.
The offense was more than enough for the Brewers, as she tallied their fifth shutout of the season, allowing Ramapo just two shots on the game as
Paige Amico and
Liz Rotolo combined for the shutout. Vassar outshot the Roadrunners 35-2, while earning four of the game's five penalty corners. Ramapo keepers made 21 saves in the game as well.
"It was an excellent team win, we were connecting
as a team, playing as a team and playing our game," said head coach
Michael Warari.
Vassar won't have much time to get ready for its next contest, as the Brewers travel to Wayne, NJ Monday evening to take on the Pioneers of William Paterson University.
