Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Parson Makes History In Vassar's Comeback Win

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 5, 2016) - Senior captain Noah Parson became the all-time leading scorer for the Vassar College men's lacrosse team, as the Brewers rallied to defeat the Swarthmore Garnet, 11-7, on Saturday.

After getting into early penalty trouble, the Brewers trailed 6-3 at the break. Still, they kept their cool.

"Our coaches really preach composure," said Brandon Klein, who led the defensive effort with four ground balls and four forced turnovers. "At halftime today, we came together, said 'we got this' and settled down. We knew that we could play sixes with them."

Parson sparked an 8-0 surge, scoring the first goal of the second half. The goal marked his seventh of the season and the 92nd of his career, as he surpassed Max Herman, who tallied 91 goals from 2011 to 2014.

Thirty-five seconds later, Sam Houston-Read potted a goal, assisted by Liam Moriarty, to get the Brewers within one, 6-5. Later in the quarter, Pat Gibbons scored his first goal of the season to deadlock it at 6-all, Houston-Read struck again for the lead and Chris Billups gave the Brewers some breathing room with his second goal of the day, 8-6.

Billups has taken nine shots so far this season and seven have found the back of the net. He and Parson currently lead the team in scoring, as 11 Brewers have had at least one goal.

Houston-Read scored a hat trick three minutes into the final frame, and Moriarty and Gibbons each netted their second goals of the contest to push the Brewer lead to five, 11-6.

For Moriarty's first goal of the day, he and Houston-Read executed the hidden-ball trick, which freed the junior and allowed him to walk in and beat the Swarthmore keeper over his left shoulder.

Cole Fox took the loss for the Garnet, allowing 11 goals with 10 saves, while Brandon Crecco earned the win, surrendering seven and saving 10.

"It's easy for a goalie to look good when his defense does such a good job," Crecco said.

Coach Marc Graham also complimented the Vassar defense: "A lot of great double-teams, great ground balls. When we settled down, we cleared the ball perfectly in the second half, and those are all huge for us."

With the win, the Brewers improve to 2-1, while the Garnet drop to 3-1.

The Vassar men's lacrosse team will lace up next against Connecticut College in New London, CT. The game is set for Wednesday, March 9 at 4 p.m.
