Vassar Women's Lacrosse Notes — Western Connecticut, Bard

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 28, 2016) — The Vassar College women's lacrosse team (3-2, 0-0 Liberty League) will conclude its non-conference schedule against local rival Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT on Wednesday, March 30 at 7 p.m.

Last Time Out
The Brewers were solid their last time out, earning a 15-10 win at Mount Saint Mary College on Thursday. Three players posted six points in the win: Kim Mulvehill and Storm Sideleau each scored four goals and had two assists, while Isabelle Goldstein scored three goals and had three assists. The score was tied 6-all by the end of the first half, but within the first ten minutes of the second, the Brewers outscored the Saints 7-1 to take the lead. Olivia O'Loughlin won a team high seven draw controls to help spark the run. The Brewers defensive effort was hurt by yellow cards, which resulted in three man-up goals in the second half out of the four total second-half goals for the Knights. Goalie Kristin Caolo earned the win with seven saves.

A Look at the Western Connecticut Colonials (3-2, 0-0 Little East Conference)
Western Connecticut State has won its past two games, most recently defeating common opponent Mount Saint Mary by a score of 17-9 on March 17. Destinee Cary scored eight goals and had one assist in the win. Raquel Heitor and Lindsey Eanniello both had two goals and three assists, combining for six ground balls and five caused turnovers in the effort. Carley Altemose earned a game-high 11 draw controls. As a team, the Colonials won 19 of 29 draws on their way to victory. Prior to that, Western Connecticut defeated Farmingdale State 10-5 at home.

The team opened the season with a 15-4 loss against Castleton on March 5. Western Connecticut's first win came in its home-opener against Worcester State by a score of 16-14 on March 10. The Colonials' lone loss at home came against Connecticut College, 17-10, two days later.

Against Western Connecticut All-Time
Vassar is 7-1 against Western Connecticut since their first meeting in 2008. The Brewers' only loss came in 2012, which means the class of 2016 remains undefeated against the local rival. In 2015, Vassar walked away with a 20-12 win in Florida on its spring break trip. The then-underclassmen notched 18 of the 20 total goals, led by Goldstein with five, Julia Trudell with four and Mulvehill with three.

A Look at the Bard Raptors (2-2, 0-0 Liberty League)
After opening the season with two losses, Bard earned two road wins against Notre Dame of Maryland University and Wesley College. Bard lost to common opponent New Paltz 15-9 in Kingston, NY. In the Raptors' most recent win, they fought back from a 5-2 deficit at half to earn a 9-8 win over The Sage Colleges in Troy, NY. The visiting squad opened the second half with six unanswered goals to secure the lead. Six Bard players earned points in the win, led by Nicole Ellin, who totaled three goals with an assist. Alexandra Clarke had a huge game all over the field, earning five draw controls, five ground balls, four caused-turnovers, two assists and a goal.

Against Bard All-Time
Vassar has an unbeaten 4-0 record against Bard, since their first meeting in 2011. Most recently, Vassar earned a 12-3 win at home en route to a Liberty League playoff berth in 2015. O'Loughlin, a freshman at the time, had a breakout game, scoring a hat trick in the victory.

Common Foes
Both Vassar and Bard have faced local rival New Paltz. The Brewers defeated the Hawks 15-5 in their home opener, while Bard lost by a score of 15-9.

Mount Saint Mary College met a similar fate against both Vassar and Western Connecticut State, falling to the Brewers 15-10, and to the Colonials 17-9. Both teams outshot Mount Saint Mary by similar margins. Vassar had 27 turnovers to Mount Saint Mary's 28, while Western Connecticut and Mount Saint Mary both had 18 apiece. Vassar picked up 29 ground balls to Mount Saint Mary's 21, while Western Connecticut earned 15 ground balls to Mount Saint Mary's 14.

Top of the Liberty League
Vassar has shown dominance on the offensive end, ranking first in the League in shot percentage (51.1), goals per game (13.4), assists per game (7.2) and points per game (20.6).

Honor Rollin
Kim Mulvehill earned a Liberty League Honor Roll mention Monday for her performances last week. Mulvehill's motor never quit, as she totaled six goals and five assists in Vassar's 1-1 week. She also collected five ground balls and forced one turnover in those games to stuff her stat sheet even further. In Vassar's 12-11 setback in overtime at Fairleigh Dickinson University - Florham on Wednesday, Mulvehill got things started by assisting for the first goal of the game. Then after falling behind, she assisted on another goal to get the Brewers within one, 4-3, before netting a goal of her own to knot it at 5. Later, she put the Brewers ahead 9-8 with a help to Julia Trudell before scoring her second goal of the contest, 11-10, in Vassar's late-game push.

Go-Getter Goldstein
Isabelle Goldstein's pass-first approach has helped the Brewers on numerous occasions. The senior leads the team with 13 assists for a total of 24 points through five games. She has also been dynamic on the defensive end, grabbing a team-best 13 ground balls and forcing a team-high 11 turnovers.

Team Assists
Vassar is averaging 7.2 assists per game through five games, which is the best in the Liberty League and likely ranks them among the top 20 assisting teams in the nation. As of March 24, Vassar ranked 25th in the nation with 6.75 assists per game through four contests.

Draw Controls
Sophomore middie Olivia O'Loughlin has been aggressive getting the ball and leads her team with 17 total draw controls this season. Her 3.4 draw controls per game ranks sixth best in the conference.

Goalie Nation
Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Caolo is third in the Liberty League in saves per game, averaging 7.4 through five games. Her 45.1 save percentage is currently ninth in the League out of 17 listed goalies.

The Vassar women's lacrosse team will open Liberty League competition with a back-to-back next week, hosting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday, April 8 and Skidmore College on Saturday, April 9 for the Friends of Jaclyn Day game.
