WINTER HAVEN, FL (March 16, 2016) – Keene State College sophomore Christian Bourgea was 3-for-5 with four RBI to lead the Owls to a 12-2 win over the Vassar College baseball team in action from the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Chain of Lakes Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
Vassar College fell behind in the top half of the first, as Bourgea put KSC (4-4) on the board with a two-run shot to right field off Brewer starter
Derek DeMild. Keene State added to its lead with three in the second frame, capped by an RBI single from Bourgea.
The Brewers pulled to within four at 5-1 with a run in the bottom of the third, as sophomore
Bobby Kinne plated Brad Kendall with an RBI groundout. The Owls would score seven runs over the next two frames though to pull away for the seven-inning win.
Senior
Brooks English reached twice and was 1-for-3 on the day, while
Cory Wuenschell singled and scored a run as well for VC. Freshman infielder
Alex Hartnett made his first appearance in the seventh inning, serving a 0-2 pitch into center field for his first collegiate hit. Senior catcher
Dakota Sagnelli also singled for the Brewers, while Kendall finished with two walks.
Sophomore
John Madsen allowed no earned runs in his first collegiate appearance in relief, surrendering three hits, while fellow newcomer
Matt Schwartz also went a scoreless inning out of the bullpen. Junior
Mike Koscielniak walked two in the seventh for Vassar, but worked around the free passes to hold Keene State off the board.
Keene State starting pitcher Noah Rizio earned the win after going 5.1 innings on the hill, allowing three hits and two earned runs. Keith Simpson came on for KSC, and allowed just one hit and no runs in 1.2 innings of work. Joe Libby was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Mac Struthers was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Vinny Parilla added two hits for the Owls, who posted 13 knocks on the afternoon.
Vassar (2-3) will pack up and head to Fort Myers, FL now for the Gene Cusic Classic, taking on the University of Wisconsin-Stout Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the Player Development Complex for a pair of non-conference contests.
