CANTON, NY (February 7, 2016) — After falling in both competitions on day one of the Liberty League Championships on Saturday, the Vassar College men's squash team looked to rebound on Sunday. But on day two of the Liberty League Championships, the Vassar College men's squash team fell, 9-0, to both University of Rochester and Hobart College on Sunday.
Rochester 9, Vassar 0The Brewers started the day trying to keep it close against the Tigers. For No. 1,
Vincent Mencotti (Birmingham, MI/Brother Rice) kept each game close, falling in three sets to Mario Yanez Tapia, 11-6, 11-7, 11-6. Then
Timothy Veit (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) tried to stay competitive for No. 2, but Ryosei Kobayashi took the match in three rounds, 11-9, 11-3, 11-8.
Vassar fell in three sets in the following five matches, as Rochester picked up the win. Of the contests' final matches,
Richard Bryenton's was probably the most interesting. Bryenton (Knoxville, TN/West) fell in three sets to Christian Riedelsheimer, but by scores of 11-0, 11-5, 11-6.
Hobart 9, Vassar 0The Brewers fought hard, especially in the early matches of their competition with the Statesmen. Mencotti lost in three rounds to Josh Oakley, but only by scores of 11-7, 11-8, 11-9 for No. 1. Then for No. 2, Veit also scored multiple points, but fell to Beau Orchard, 11-7, 11-5, 11-8.
Another interesting match of the day was played by
Ben Kurchin (Rochester, NY/Harley School), who forced opponent Felipe Pantle to fight in the first game. Pantle ultimately took No. 4 in three sets, 14-12, 11-5, 11-3, but it featured the only round that went past 11 points.
The Vassar men's squash team will head to Middletown, CT for two matches on Feb. 13. The Brewers will first face Tufts University at 12 p.m. before playing Wesleyan University at 2:30 p.m.
