Women Place Third in Seven Sisters

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 6, 2016) — Just a week after the Vassar College women's squash team captured the title in the Hudson Valley Team Tournament, the Brewers placed third of four teams in the annual Seven Sisters Championships, which was held in Kenyon Hall on Saturday. 

Vassar 9, Smith College 0
The Vassar women started strong, shutting out Smith, 9-0 in the day's first match. The Brewers rolled through six matches before earning default wins at No. 7, No. 8 and No.9 Hannah Nice (Hanover, NH/Hanover) began by beating Josephine Surer in three sets, 11-3, 11-1, 11-4, for No. 1. 

Fiona Agger (Brooklyn, NY/Saint Ann's School) notched No. 2 with an 11-3, 11-2,11-3 win over Carly Melillio. Jiamin Wu (Singapore, Singapore/Raffles Institution) edged Genna Choo, 11-6, 15-13, 11-6, for No.3, while Isabelle Bertram (Salt Lake City, UT/West) beat Leah Jeon for No. 4, 11-3, 11-3, 11-3.

The Brewers kept the shutout in tact, as Cherylann Mucciolo (Shohola, PA/Blair Academy) and Diana Howland (New York, NY/Phillips Academy Andover) won in three sets, 11-5, 11-5, 11-2 and 11-4, 11-4, 11-4, respectively.

Wellesley College 9, Vassar 0
Vassar saw the day's winning streak end in its next match, falling 9-0 to Wellesley. The wins to No. 1 and No. 2 were the most exciting of the day. Nice's match lasted five games, as Sarah Zhang defeated her, 13-11, 11-8, 5-11, 8-11, 13-11, for No. 1. Phyllis Lin then beat Agger in four games, 14-12, 9-11, 11-1, 11-2, for No. 2. Wu, Mucciolo and Howland fell in three games, as Meera Nayar, Gabrilla Wynne and Haley Connor of Wellesley earned No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6., respectively. For spot No. 5, Reha Advani put up a good fight against Bertram to defeat her in four games, 9-11, 11-0, 11-2, 11-4.

Mount Holyoke College 5, Vassar 4
Vassar put forth a tremendous effort, but ultimately fell one set short to the Mount Holyoke Lyons. The match was ultimately decided in the seventh competition. After the Brewers took the first two sets, the Lyons rallied for the next five to secure the victory. Nice earned No. 1 by beating Brandy Williamson in four games, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 11-2, while Agger hustled for No. 2 by defeating Allison Shilling in five, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6. 

Wu, Bertram and Howland fought, but fell in four games to Catherine Ryan, Lessly Portillo and Annie Wong, as the Mount Holyoke women took No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6, respectively.  The No. 5 set was settled in three games, as Emily Change defeated Mucciolo, 11-7, 11-1, 11-5, and the deciding No. 7 set also went three games, as Rose Minichiello topped Emma Glickman (Livingston, NJ/Golda Och Academy), 11-4, 11-2, 11-3.
