Vassar's Winning Streak Snapped at Three

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 6, 2016) – The Vassar College women's basketball team saw its winning streak snap at three, falling 73-58 to Rochester Institute of Technology at the Athletics and Fitness Center on Saturday.

With the loss, the Brewers fall to 7-14 overall and 4-8 in conference play, while the Tigers improve to 17-4 and 10-2 in the Liberty League.

Three Brewers scored in double figures: Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) and Nicole Teta (Maspeth, NY/Archbishop Molloy) tallied 16 points apiece, while Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) added 13.

The Tigers outshot the Brewers, 41 percent to 35, and out-rebounded them, 45-30. Drakeley and Rose Serafini (Milton, ON, CAN/Milton District) led the rebounding effort with five boards apiece.

With her game-high four blocks in Saturday's contest, Rose has denied multiple baskets in seven of her past eight games.

The Brewers got off to a solid start, as Colleen O'Connell (Maywood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) drilled a triple to push their lead to 7-2. But the Tigers responded with an 8-2 run to take its first lead, 10-9.

Both teams stayed within two possessions the entire first half, as Vassar led by as many as five and trailed by as many as two.

The first half was neck-and-neck with five ties and nine lead changes, but a Teta triple gave the Brewers a 26-23 edge going into intermission.

RIT came out of the break ready to battle, outscoring Vassar 23-8 in the third quarter. Tara Lynch scored nine of her 22 total points in the frame to spark the Tigers' offense.

The shots continued to fall for the Tigers, as they scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter.

The Brewers trimmed the Tigers' lead to 56-47, scoring seven in a row with 3:58 remaining in regulation. Vassar would get as close as seven before RIT closed the game by scoring 12 of the final 16 points to win its seventh straight.

In addition to Lynch's 22-point effort, Jessica Glaz totaled 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Vassar women's basketball team hits the road for two games before playing its final home game of the regular season Feb 17. The first of those two road games will be in Schenectady, NY, as the Brewers face the Union Dutchwomen on Friday at 6 p.m.
