SCHENECTADY, NY (February 12, 2016) — The Vassar College women's basketball team cruised by Union College, 66-54, behind
Ariella Rosenthal's second double-double of the season Friday.
Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) totaled game-highs in points (25), rebounds (10) and steals (three), and
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) added 12 points to help Vassar improve to 8-14 overall and 5-8 in conference play.
Meanwhile, Union fell to 14-7 and 8-5 in the Liberty League, despite three Dutchwomen scoring in double figures. Natalie Leone led Union with 12 points and six rebounds, while Erin Lyons and Sophie Borg finished with 10 points apiece.
Vassar shot 49 percent from the floor, while holding Union to 38 percent. The Brewers also capitalized on the Dutchwomen's miscues to score 21 points off their 21 turnovers.
Although the Dutchwomen out-rebounded the Brewers, 36-34, freshman
Nicole Teta (Maspeth, NY/Archbishop Molloy) grabbed a career-best eight boards to lead the game.
Union led by as many as six points in the first quarter, as Borg made back-to-back layups to put the Dutchwomen ahead, 10-4, with four minutes remaining.
After a 30-second timeout, the Brewers scored seven unanswered to regain the lead, 11-10. Rosenthal capped the run with a jumper before scoring another five straight points for the Brewers, helping them take a 20-16 advantage into the second period.
In the second, the Brewers quickly extended their lead to eight, 24-16, with baskets from Rosenthal and
Maddie Leong (Atascadero, CA/Atascadero) to open the quarter. The Dutchwomen would chip away to tie it once at 24-all and then again at 32-all to head into intermission.
After four ties and eight lead changes in the first half, the Brewers never trailed in the second.
Vassar scored the first 11 points of the second half, thanks to contributions from four different Brewers. Union would get as close as six, but the third period proved to be pivotal. The Brewers never looked back after outscoring the Dutchwomen in the frame, 16-9.
Union trailed 48-41 heading into the fourth quarter, but quickly cut the deficit to five with 7:30 to go. Rosenthal responded with a jumper, but the Dutchwomen got within five on the next possession. Again, Rosenthal answered with a basket, and the Brewers led by three possessions the rest of the way.
Drakeley and
Alex Moon (Mission Hills, CA/Bishop Alemany) combined to score the final eight points for the Brewers, as they took their largest lead of the game of 12 points.
The Vassar women's basketball team looks to carry its momentum when it faces Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY on Saturday at 2 p.m.
