POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 6, 2016) – The Vassar College men's basketball team ran past Rochester Institute of Technology behind
Mickey Adams' career-best 21 points Saturday night.
RIT never led, as Vassar earned its second straight win after beating Hobart College, 75-66, the night before.
With the victory, the Brewers improve to 11-10 overall and 7-5 in conference play, while the Tigers drop to 10-11 and 6-6 in the Liberty League.
In addition to Adams' 21-point performance, three other Brewers scored in double figures:
Alex Seff (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) contributed 18 points,
Jesse Browne (Barrington, RI/Deerfield Academy) added 15 and
Erikson Wasyl (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) finished with 10.
Vassar outshot RIT 44 to 42 percent from the floor and outscored the Tigers 33-12 from long.
The Brewers came out firing from three. Adams (Boston, MA/ St. Sebastian's School) drained back-to-back triples before Browne drilled another to give them a 9-2 advantage. RIT would answer with a trey of its own, but Vassar used a 9-2 run to take an 11-point lead, 18-7.
Vassar stretched its lead to 14 before RIT forward Kamron Davis sparked a 10-7 surge with six straight points, helping the Tigers get within seven, 28-21, with 3:25 left in the half.
RIT kept chipping away, eventually getting within five, 33-28, to go into the locker rooms.
Vassar scored the first eight points of the second half, as Wasyl drilled a three from the corner to push the Brewer lead to 13, 41-28.
Seff would score the next two buckets for the Brewers, rattling in a triple and scooping in a layup, to extend their lead to 16, 46-30, with about 16 minutes left.
Two minutes later, Browne gave the Brewers their largest lead with a triple to make it a 17-point contest, 51-34.
But the Tigers responded with 10 unanswered to get within seven. RIT guard AJ Horde highlighted the run with six points on three layups. Horde would later strike from beyond the arc to get the Tigers as close as six, 60-54, at the five-minute, 22-second mark. RIT would get within six once more with 21 seconds on the clock, but that would be the closest it would come to turning the tables.
Horde led the Tigers with a game-high 23 points, while Davis added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Day was a success for the Vassar men's basketball team, which will hit the road for two games before returning to Poughkeepsie for this season's final home game Feb. 17. The Brewers first face the Union College Dutchmen on Friday at 8 p.m. before playing the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds on Saturday at 4 p.m.
