WALLINGFORD, CT (February 21, 2016) -- According to acting assistant coach
Tony Brown, who has been with the team recently, the Vassar College women's squash team's attitude has been exemplary and supportive all season, as the women have given 100 percent in each match this weekend at the College Squash Association (CSA) Championships. Sunday the Brewers were topped in the consolation final of the Epps Cup (D Division) by Mount Holyoke College 7-2, but there were some very competitive matches Sunday.
Sophomore
Hannah Nice continued her strong weekend with another win at No. 1, as she was able to knock off Brandy Williamson 11-8, 11-8, 7-11 and 11-8. Freshman
Fiona Agger made quick work of her opponent at No. 2, as she showed a poise and calmness to her game in an 11-5, 11-7 and 11-6 victory. Mount Holyoke would earn the last seven matches to earn the team win, but there were some highlights in defeat for the Brewers.
Sophomore
Cherylann Mucciolo and Emily Chang put on a show at No. 5, sending the match to five sets. Mucciolo started the contest with an 11-7 win but Chang responded with wins of 11-4 and 11-6 to take a 2-1 match lead. The fiery second-year squasher for the Brewers didn't go away, chalking up an 11-7 win in the fourth set to push the match to a fifth and final game. Once there Chang was able to pull away for the win with an 11-2 score in the fifth.
Junior
Isabelle Bertram pushed her match to four sets at No. 4, evening the match at a game apiece after a 12-10 win in the second. Catherine Ryan was able to pull though for the Lyons though, capturing an 11-6, 10-12, 11-6 and 11-8 win. At No. 9, sophomore
Kelly Rissman took an early match lead with an 11-8 win in the first, but Tanishka Sachidanand was able to earn the second and third sets to put MHC up early in the match. Rissman nearly tied the match in the fourth, but Sachidanand rallied and pulled out the 12-10 fourth set to earn the victory.
At No. 10, first-year player
Julia Pollak has one of the most exciting matches of the day for Vassar, which was best described here by Brown. "It was trench warfare at it's most attritional level but in the end the barrage of volleys and thunderous serves gave Pollak of Vassar a win at against Kirina Gar-Macmichael of Mt. Holyoke. Pollak produced an Oscar worthy performance and won a 5-setter against her Mount Holyoke counterpart. The Vassar freshman won 3-2. She came back from losing the first two sets and it was a testimony to the spirit and resilience displayed by the whole squad on this Championship weekend. She won 5-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-7, and 11-7."
The Brewers graduate two seniors in
Parisa Halaji and captain
Steph Zhu, but the majority of the young and energetic squash team returns next year with another year under its belt.
