NEW HAVEN, CT (February 20, 2016) – Every win mattered for the Vassar College women's squash team on Saturday evening, as the Brewers moved into the Epps Cup (D Division) Consolation Final with a thrilling 5-4 win over Boston College in day two of the College Squash Association (CSA) Championships from Yale University.
The Brewers will now take on rival Mount Holyoke College tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. in the final day of action for Vassar. VC has lost twice to the Lyons this year, but the last meeting at the Seven Sisters Championships ended in a 5-4 decision back on February 6.
As for Saturday's match with the Eagles, Vassar was able to control the middle of the ladder as well as the top two positions to pick up the much-needed win. Sophomore
Hannah Nice, who has been the unquestioned No. 1 since her arrival at VC, earned hard fought wins in her first two sets 11-9, and after an 11-4 defeat in the third, rallied to close out the match with an 11-5 victory in the fourth.
Freshman
Fiona Agger was a straight set winner over Caroline Whelan with scores of 11-8, 11-6 and 13-11, but Carlie Ladda of BC knocked off
Jiamin Wu at No. 3. Vassar's strength though the ladder was what made the difference, as the Brewer's No. 4 through No. 6 all picked up big victories. The match of the day was definitely at No. 5, as sophomore
Cherylann Mucciolo and Grace Tregidgo played a thriller that went the distance.
In that match, Mucciolo earned a quick 11-9 win but Tregidgo matched her opponent from Vassar to pull the match even. In the third set, Vassar's No. 5 repeated her first set score line to make it 2-1, but an 11-4 win for Tregidgo once again knotted the match. In the fifth set, both women played extremely well but Mucciolo was just able to edge her opponent with an 11-8 win, providing maybe the biggest win of the day.
Teammates
Isabelle Bertram and
Diana Howland also won, which was what the Brewers needed to clinch the match. Howland cruised at No. 6, playing well to pick up an 11-6, 13-11, 11-8 win, while Bertram posted an 11-4, 11-1, 7-11 and 11-4 victory.
Sophomore
Emma Glickman pushed her match to four sets at No. 7 before being toppled by Caroline Kulig 11-5, 6-11, 11-6 and 11-6, and senior
Steph Zhu also battled at No. 8 but couldn't come up with the win as she fell 11-8, 11-2, 11-13, 11-4.
Vassar College (7-8) will look some sisterly revenge tomorrow morning, as the Brewers try to finish the season with a .500 record for the second straight season.
