ALLENTOWN, PA (February 20, 2016) – The Vassar College women's tennis team breezed by Muhlenberg College on the road, 9-0, to improve to 3-1 on the season.
"We went in with the attitude that we want to set the tone," coach
Bruce Levine said. "We want to produce and show what we can do against D-III teams, and we did."
Kelsey Van Noy (Houston, TX/Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart) and
Lauren Stauffer (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) put the Brewers on the board with an 8-1 win over Brittany Gould and Meghan Olsen for No. 2 doubles.
Morgane Flournoy (Grosse Pointe, MI/Grosse Pointe South) and
Morgan Fitzgerald (Encinitas, CA/Cal Coast Academy) kept it going to take No. 3 doubles, 8-2, over Jenny Levenson and Carina Nicolaisen, and
Shayna Becker (Sherman Oaks, CA/University) and
Hanna McGuire (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) completed the sweep with an 8-1 win over Sara Finger and Jamie Rosenblum for No. 1 doubles.
"We really had a strong performance in dubs," Levine said. "Kind of a bit like knives through butter, which was nice."
The Brewers maintained their momentum in singles. First, Flournoy went head-to-head with Gould for a 6-3, 6-1 victory in No. 3 singles, and Becker clinched the team win with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Olsen for the fourth slot.
With that, the Muhlenberg fell to 0-2 on the season. Although the Mules lost by default, they continued to compete at a high level.
"We had a couple of really tough two-setters at one and two, and they did a great job of hanging in the match and competing well," Levine said. "When push came to shove, they did what they had to do."
The next two matches proved to be grind-it-out wins for the Brewers, as
Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) defeated Finger, 7-5, 6-4, and
Courtney Geiss (Charleston, SC/Laurel Springs School) beat Rosenblum by the same score for No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
"The style (that Geiss's) opponent played was very difficult and made it tough for her," Levine said. "And Kate's opponent was tight the whole time with her. It was a well-fought match.
Connie Yoo (Irvine, CA/Beckman) and
Dasha Ivenitsky (South Salem, NY/John Jay) rounded the day with 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2 victories for the No. 6 singles and No. 5 singles match, respectively.
"I'm really proud of the team," Levine said. "They had a great day, and I'm looking forward to a whole bunch more just like it."
The Vassar women's tennis team stays on the road for some Liberty League action against Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 11 a.m.
