MIDDLETOWN, CT (February 13, 2016) – The Vassar College women's squash team traveled to Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon, dropping a pair of matches to No. 23 Tufts University and No. 29 Wesleyan. The Brewers dropped a 7-2 match to the Jumbos, falling in the nightcap 9-0 to the host Cardinals.
Tufts 7, Vassar 2The Brewers had some success at the top of the ladder against Tufts, but couldn't keep that momentum going down the lineup as Vassar fell 7-2. Despite the loss, Vassar saw some strong performances on the match.
Sophomore
Hannah Nice chalked up a nice win at No. 1, earning a straight set victory with scores of 11-5, 11-7 and 11-9. Vassar's No. 2 player,
Fiona Agger, followed suit with a five-set thriller, pulling out the victory after going the distance. Agger fell behind after a 12-10 first set against Zarena Jafry, but battled back to earn 11-7 wins in both the second and third game. Jafry earned an 11-5 win in the fourth, but Agger persevered and outlasted her opponent for an 11-7 win in the final set.
Sophomore
Cherylann Mucciolo battled hard at No. 5, but dropped an 11-8, 11-6 and 11-3 match, and fellow sophomore
Emma Glickman pushed her second set to 14-12 before dropping her contest in three games. No. 9 player
Kelly Rissman took an early lead with an 11-6 win in the first set, but Nellie Harvey of Tufts came back to earn a 6-11, 11-9, 11-6 and 11-7 victory. Senior
Steph Zhu also nearly had a different result, getting tripped up in three games though two were by a 12-10 score line.
Wesleyan 9, Vassar 0In Vassar's final match of the regular season, the No. 25 Cardinals of Wesleyan proved to be just a bit too much in the 9-0 loss. Agger rallied from being down 2-0 thanks to a 12-10 win in the third set, but she couldn't get all the way back in dropping an 11-6, 11-8, 10-12 and 11-9 loss.
Junior
Isabelle Bertram was in her match at No. 4 the whole way, but couldn't pick up a set in dropping a competitive 11-6, 11-8 and 15-13 match. Mucciolo nearly picked up her second set, falling in an 11-6, 12-10 and 11-3 match, while
Julia Pollak earned a set in a four-game loss with scores of 11-5, 11-2, 5-11, 11-6.
The Brewers will now head to New Haven, CT for the College Squash Associations Championships this upcoming weekend at Yale University.
