Vassar Falls in Close Contest at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (February 13, 2016) — Freshman Nicole Teta totaled team highs in points, rebounds and steals, as the Vassar College women's basketball team fell, 72-69, to Skidmore College on the road Saturday.

Teta (Maspeth, NY/Archbishop Molloy) tallied 22 points, five rebounds and three steals, as one of three Brewers to score in double figures. Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) added 19 points, while Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) chipped in with 11.

The Brewers shot 37 percent from the floor with eight three-pointers, while the Thoroughbreds shot 49 percent with four triples. Skidmore out-rebounded Vassar, 38-35, but the Brewers scored more second-chance points, 15-13.

Vassar fought until the very end in a game that had 10 ties and five lead changes. With the loss, the Brewers fall to 8-15 overall and 5-9 in conference play, while the Thoroughbreds improve to 13-10 and 7-7 in the Liberty League.

Guard Kelly Donnelly led Skidmore with 29 points, 11 rebounds and two steals, center Migle Viluaite added 12 points and guard Ari Fustini finished with 10.

The Brewers quickly got out to a 10-4 lead, but the Thoroughbreds responded with nine unanswered. Teta ended the drought with five straight points, a jumper and a triple, to regain the lead, 15-13.

Skidmore would claim the lead once more before Teta came through with a trey, putting Vassar ahead 20-18 to go into the second.

The Thoroughbreds outscored the Brewers 15-10 in the second stanza to take a 33-30 edge into the break.

Skidmore scored the first six point of the second half, but Vassar ended the third quarter on a 13-4 run. Teta topped the surge with another three, knotting it at 53-all to go into the final frame.

Only eight field goals were made between the two teams in the fourth quarter, as Skidmore outscored Vassar, 19-16, in the period. Seventeen of the total 35 points of the quarter came from the foul line.

The Vassar women's basketball team will play its final home game of the regular season Wednesday when it takes on Bard College at 6 p.m. in the Athletics and Fitness Center.
