Brewer Women Topped At Mount Saint Mary, 67-53

NEWBURGH, NY (November 22, 2016) — The Vassar College women's team wrapped up its three-game road trip with a 67-53 setback at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY on Tuesday evening.

Leading the offensive effort for the Brewers were Ariella Rosenthal with 16 points and Samarah Cook with 13 points and a game-high five assists. Cook also put in work on the defense end, grabbing six rebounds and blocking a shot.

As for MSMC, Kayla Cleare led with 17 points, as the only Knight to reach double figures.

The Brewers shot 29 percent from the floor, 25 percent (5-of-10) from three and 92 percent from the charity stripe, while the home team shot 40 percent, 18 percent from deep (2-of-11) and 68 percent from the line. While both sides struggled from downtown, MSMC finished from close, outscoring Vassar in the paint, 32-18.

Rosenthal briefly gave Vassar a lead early in the first quarter, laying in a bucket before knocking down the and-one, 8-7.

MSMC scored 10 of the following 12 points to extend its lead to 17-10 before Vassar ended the quarter with an 8-4 run to pull within 19-16 by the end of the first.

The Brewers struggled to find their stride in the second stanza, as they were outscored 11-2 in the frame. Sophie Nick broke up the scoring with a jumper, thanks to a pass from Cook.

Although the Knights took a 30-18 lead into the break, the Brewers remained aggressive. Nick, Rosenthal and Cook netted the first two field goals of the second half to pull within single digits, 31-22.

MSMC pushed its lead to as many as 11, 36-27, before Vassar notched another trifecta of field goals — this time, from Nick, Cook and Nicole Teta — to make it a 36-32 ballgame.

The Knights took off from there, outscoring the Brewers 29-11 over the third and fourth quarters to take a 65-43 advantage. Rosenthal scored four straight for the Brewers to break up the scoring, knocking down a pair from the line before connecting on a jumper.

Showing determination until the very end, the Brewers notched 10 of the final 12 points. Cook capped the late-game run, drilling a three with three seconds remaining.

Vassar returns to Poughkeepsie for a trifecta of games, beginning with a meeting against William Paterson University on Monday, Nov. 28. Tip-off from the Athletics and Fitness Center is set for 6 p.m.
