POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 19, 2016) – The Vassar College women's squash team moved to 5-1 on the young season Saturday afternoon, as the Brewers posted wins over No. 29 Connecticut College and Haverford College in action from Kenyon Hall.
The Brewers were able to top the Camels 7-2 before pulling out an 8-1 victory over Haverford in the nightcap. Connecticut College knocked off Haverford in the middle match 6-3. Vassar started the day with an exciting win over CC, as VC used three late wins to secure the victory.
VC started with a three wins thanks to wins by No. 9
Kelly Rissman, No. 6
Cherylann Mucciolo and No. 3
Isabelle Bertram. In those matches, Rissman won a thrilling first set 15-13, and then out-battled Ashley Berry over the next two games with scores of 11-7 and 11-8 for the win. Mucciolo also won in three, but had to work as she earned a 12-10, 11-6 and 12-10 win.
Senior
Isabelle Bertram was the only one of the three to win with general ease, as she chalked up a nice 11-2, 11-4 and 11-5 win over Anne Holly. Vassar would earn another win at No. 8, as senior
Diana Howland pushed past Phoebe Pilakas Smith with scores of 11-7, 11-7 and 11-5, but CC trimmed its deficit after picking up wins at No. 2 and No. 5.
Vassar needed just one win going into the final three matches, and newcomers
Sydney Nemphos and
Alessandra Pilkington, along with junior captain
Hannah Nice all prevailed to help the hosts to the win. Pilkington's win was the most competitive match of the day, as she fell behind a set, but battled back with two straight games to jump ahead. Caroline Lippincott won the fourth set 11-9 but Pilkington turned in an 11-4 win to capture the 8-11, 11-8, 11-3, 9-11 and 11-4 win.
Nice earned a win at No. 1 over Mawa Ballo with scores of 11-5, 11-6 and 12-10, as she moved to 4-1 on the year. Nemphos also picked up an 11-2, 11-3 and 11-7 to complete the seven wins for Vassar.
In the nightcap, Vassar controlled the match from the start, rolling to the 8-1 win. Nice chalked up her second victory of the day with a convincing 11-3, 11-1, 11-3 victory. Bertram was a double winner as well for Vassar, chalking up an 11-5, 11-4, 9-11 and 11-5 triumph at No. 3.
Nemphos was a straight set winner with scores of 11-3, 11-4 and 11-5, while senior
Carly Scher topped Emilia Cobb at No. 5 after posting scores of 11-3, 11-5 and 11-3. Mucciolo defeated Olivia Franco 11-3, 11-7 and 11-5, and Pilkington was another double winner Saturday with an 11-4, 11-1, 11-3 decision. Howland topped Sophie Jackson 11-5, 11-2 and 11-4 at No. 8, and Rissman bagged another win with an 11-5, 11-4 and 11-5 triumph at No. 9.
The Brewers on the year are now 40-14 on the season as a team, while six players have chalked up records of 5-1. The 5-1 record through six matches is the best since the 2003-04 season, when the Brewers started out 6-1 on the campaign en route to a 13-5 season.
Vassar will host Tufts University Sunday, December 4 at 12:30 p.m. in more home action from Kenyon Hall.
